I have the day off tomorrow 8/28/09 and was figuring to brew up a beer during the day. I am taking two ideas that I have never done before and combining them into one beer and see how it turns out. I am going to try Hop Bursting and make all my additions from 30 mins till 0 minutes. Secondly I am going to make an India Black Ale. I am going to mash for 75 mins the grain bill you see below but I am going to darken the color by crushing 4oz of Carafa II and 4oz of Roasted Barlety and adding the 8oz to the mash when I start to vorlauf then I will collect my running as normal. I am just trying for a suble roast flavor but more of a dark color in the final beer along with an IPA hop bite. Bitterness Ratio is 1.171. I am going to ferment with US-05 so I can get a nice low final gravity and let the grain and hop bill shine through. Let me know what you think. Mash in is tomorrow morning. Where are you going to mash?

I plan to mash as normal for all my beers. In my 10 gallon Rubbermaid Cooler on the garage or back deck tomorrow.

I'm sure he meant at what temp. With that much hops I wouldn't cap the mash, just throw it all in. But that's just me.....

Ok makes sense. I was planning to mash at 150. I see what you are saying DJ. Makes sense. I can just toss in the Carafa and Roasted and mash it as you said. That is what might be needed to get any flavor from them as well. It should have some hop flavor and kick so that sounds like the way to go. Thanks.

Should be an interesting beer, I'm not sure the roastiness will meld well with the high hop flavor/aroma, I'd be afraid of it tasting like burnt hops. I think you're going the right way with just a little RB and some Carafa Special for color. In any case, I'll be looking forward to hearing the results.

Thanks. I am about to add the 10 minute addition of hops and so far it smells citrusy and looks more like a Brown Ale than a Stout. Since I mashed the 8oz of color malts. Beersmith says 26SRM. Its cool, it looks good. I will glady report back on this one too. I am going to ferment with 2112 since I have a nice cake that I can use. Used it in a Common, Pale and another IPA all were/are great. I am excited for this one. Thanks for the imput.

As far as style I think it will be great. One of my favorite things to do is blend a dark ale with an IPA and my next beer will hopefully be something like what you're doing (although I'm brewing with extract and gluten free so I doubt I have anything further to contribute).I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

Well I got this one chilling in the freezer trying to bring it down to 64 degrees for a yeast pitch. I took a gravity sample. SG 1.065. I drank some of the gravity sample and it was a hop bomb up front and then that faded followed but a subte roastiness. Can't wait to see how it turns out after fermentation.

Well I transferred the batch to secondary back on 9/3/09. The FG was 1.012 which makes this a 6.5% beer. Tasting the gravity sample it definitely had an up front hop bite and it does have a small amount of roast character in the aftertaste. I am going to hold out my final judgement of the beer till it gets carbed and is on tap. Its sitting with my Denny Conn RIPA waiting for the next two taps to open up. I am happy with the beer so far too. The 2112 ripped the gravity down from 1.065 in 6 days. I will give you a further update on the flavors when I get this on tap in about 2 weeks. I think the carbonation will change it a bit.
