Long story short I ended up with a few oz. of Tradition. The Alpha is 5.3. Don't know much else about them. What can I use them for? What hop are they close too?

They were originally bred as a replacement for hallertauer Mittlefruh in Germany, they are similar to the other German Hallertuer family, and work well in this role IME.

Hallertau tradition?? That's the only hop with "tradition" in the name I know of....

Hallertauer Tradition (German) 3.5-5.5% Crystal, Liberty Known for its aromatic properties. A replacement for Hallertauer Mittelfrüh.

from byo

Similar to Hallertau Mittelfruh but crisper, "greener" character. Intense fresh hop aroma great for German pilsners. Beers made with this hop won alot of awards when it was last available a few years ago

from nthomebreweralso Mtnbrewer says:

If I can't find noble German hops, I have no problem using Hall. Tradition. I think it's a great hop and just a notch or two below the nobles. I've used them mostly in lagers but also a few ales (altbier and weizenbock). I'd recommend them.

hope that helps!

Alright thanks for all the info. I'm a little confused now because these were giving to me(from Altbev) in place of Cascade. Just confirms the incompetence of the owner a little further.

wow, not even in the same sport let alone ballpark, I hope that's just an oversight not a SOP.

Tradition as a sub for Cascade? That's horse-hockey. I have been using Tradition quite a bit over the last 2 years and I consider them a nice replacement for standard Hallertau, Tettnanger, maybe Spalt, Styrian Goldings, Hersbrucker, etc. I really like them and just picked up a few more ounces last week at 4.6%, but they're not meant to sub Cascade. Cheers.
