I think we touched on this before but... How often does it happen where someone from the same party would challenge a president when he's running for his second term? If Obama was running in 2012 and say, John Edwards jumped in and said he wanted to run... does that happen? Also, how common would it be that the VP would run and someone from the same party would crash that shindig? If Joe Biden wants to run, does Hillary run or disappear until 2024?

I think Hillary is hoping Biden wants to run as it would be an easy victory for her

it has happened before, contested primaries for a sitting president.  Reagan i believe challenged Ford in 76.  as I recall the few times it has happened it has been labeled a cause for defeat of the sitting president.

Ted Kennedy ran against Jimmy Carter when Carter was up for reelection.

Generally nobody contests the sitting president.  Not unheard of as exampled above, but generally there is no competition.

A VP running after a president's second term though is generally contested.  Al Gore had a pretty good primary fight in 2000

It sounds like something that is a little taboo because you're directly challenging someone who has reached the pinnacle of politics and they're in your own party. I know Gore ran after Clinton and Cheney did not run after Bush so I'm not sure how common it is (or isn't) for the Veep to run once the president's two terms are over. Hillary vs. Biden would be silly, IMO but I know Hillary would win that clash of the titans.

as i recall, if a vp runs after a 2 termer and wins he has always been a one termer.

And the incumbent never wins if the redskins lose the weekend before the election...  Until this time around...

Most of us don't view his gay daughter as a "bad" thing, and I don't think anyone blames Cheney for her anyway.
