Take the Black Stout is a 7% beer, brewed with base, caramel, chocolate and roasted barley malts. Hopping includes Northern Brewer and Columbus; spices are licorice root and star anise. Hue is black with full tan head. Aromas include chocolate, caramel, and earthy hops, light roastiness, a touch of fruitiness. Tastes include chocolate, coffee, rich malts, and balanced roastiness. Clean hop bitterness joins with slight woody character and spiciness; the finish offers sweet malt character leading to spicy, earthy, hop bitterness.-- brewery notes--

I picked this up today, the 750ml corked bottle. I don't have recalled watching the game of thrones. They call this a session beer in a lot of reviews- but 7% is higher i would say. I hope i like this one for $10.And i heard it was made with Belgian Yeast. Anyone else have this yet?

My stepson gave me a bottle but I'm waiting to try it until the weather gets colder.

I shared mine last night with the eldest daughter and her boyfriend. There big show fans. The beer was fantastic. I did not pick up the star anise or licorice taste, i thought it was drier than i thought it would be - but still had a nice body. We were really pleased with the taste and Aroma.

So does this beer need to be drank sooner than later?

I've not tried the Take the Black yet but I did have the Iron Throne Blond Ale (on tap) which I liked quite a bit.  If it's on tap next time I go to the neighborhood pub I try a pint...I didn't even realize they release another one until the thread

IMHO no. I believe it would age nicely.

I had it a few weeks ago.  It was pretty nice, but didn't blow me away.  I would drink it again though.  It is like $7.95 here, not a terrible price but a bit tough for me to swallow.  Ommegang used to all be like $5-$6 for a 750.  Then they started releasing specialties that were like ten bucks more than that.  I really don't understand their pricing on specialties.  Even the standard stuff is $7.95 now.  Oh well, the beer is quality always.  I love that place.  The brewery and the beer will always have a special place in my heart.

Ommegang is a very good brew. Been to the brewery this summer to see whats changed. They planted hops all around the place as their brewmasters just want to try out new variaties. Free tours and no more free tastings. Tastings are 3 bucks which includes a tasting glass. Topps market in cooperstown usually has the best price on their brews. Anyway my daughter bought the game of throwns black in CT for 11 bucks and then saw it another store for 8 bucks. Some of the package stores are really taking advantage of their customers. Its truly a hand crafted small batch beer you will enjoy very much. It ages very well too!

I wouldn't suggest that the brewers won't try those hops they are growing, but they planted those for tax reasons I think.

Just drank this beer, not bad. Not as heavy as I would like out of a stout but then again its not a very traditional stout either. Would drink again.
