I've posted about this in the past but I can't find the post.  The more I think about it the more I think I'd like to use some kind of lifting device for my chest freezer.  I'd use it to lift 10 gallons of beer so that I can use gravity to rack it.  I'd hold the fermentor up by ropes while I transferred.  What kind of winch did you guys use?

I was thinking something like this:

https://www.amazon.c...78384887&sr=1-2

and maybe get a pulley so that I can put the crank at an easy to use level.  if I could move the pulley around a little to position it over the fermentor in the freezer that might be nice too.

It's a 120V version from Harbor freight. I don't think they sell the same model. I got it on sale for around $70 on sale. My back appreciates it every time I use it.

I was thinking of going with an electric version but hand crank models are pretty cheap and with the mechannical advantage I should be fine, I think.

got anything less pricey?  i was hoping to keep the lifting part of this under $50.  then I need to build a cradle for the fermentor and some way to rig up 4 corners of it to the hoist.

A chainfall is going to offer the least resistance to the lift versus a come along.

1 x chainfall

1 x wire (or nylon) bridle or a couple wire or nylon slings

I'd also consider the integrity of what you will be tying off to.

I see they have one for $50.  not too bad.

So do you plan on making some sort of track system so you can pick it up and move it around? I don't see how it would be much help if you can only pick it up and down.

nope.  pick it up and either put something under it to hold it high or just leave it hanging while I transfer into two 5 gallon kegs outside the chest freezer.  I just need the vertical height so that I can use gravity.

Seriously, I hate moving my fermenters. My back isn't great and I've screwed it up moving too many of them around.

that's one issue.  the other is the handles on the red lid fermentors can't take the weight long term (my guess).

when you say tying off to what do you mean?  does this type of hoist not have a locking mechanism as you pull it up?  or are you referring to what I'd be hanging it from?

Yeah, I always get the fiance to help if I have to move them very far and we pick by the lid.

I mean what you are tying off or rigging from, yes.  I'm sure you will cover all bases considering the weight and potential temperature of your wort.  I'd love to rig something so I could work in larger batches.  I honestly don't know what I'd do with all the beer considering I make too much now.....

I was probably going to put a few large eyehooks into a floor joist to facilitate different hoist locations and just clip onto them as needed.
