I wouldn't use one if it wasn't dirty water but who knows I may be wrong.

considering the gunk that can be in an old keg, I wouldn't either

I wouldn't mind the float switch. I could either tie it up (this is what I do for my ice water submersible pump for use with the immersion chiller), or allow it to free float and make sure to keep enough liquid in there so that the pump doesn't run dry.

 

Getting a dirty water rated one would be good though. I think most are rated for particulate matter up to 1/2 inch in size - at least the ones in my price range that I've looked at.
