I know people in the local beekeeping club who say that commercial colony collapse disorder problems are the result of a monoculture, just one type of southern bee that was vulnerable to a certain set of environmental conditions. They are trying to cross honeybees with some local bees to get a more cold-tolerant honeybee that could compete with the existing commercial honeybee breeds.
