My brother is taking a trip to Japan this summer, and keeps posting pictures of himself drinking crap like Sapporo and Ashai.  I'd like to get him some good Japanese beer, and it looks like my favorite beer shop (State Line Liquors in Elkton, MD) has a decent selection of Baird and Hitachino.  Any recommendations from these two?  Any other good Japanese brews I might be able to find on the East Coast?

I thought it was Baird.  Not sure on that one though.

I can say with complete confidence that Baird beers are among the best in Japan.   Nest makes some good beers, but they can be hit or miss -- their white ale is probably the best, but it doesn't age really well.

Fatman, what Baird beers does your shop have? Let me know and I can (hopefully) point you toward the fresher ones. :frank:

And, when your brother comes to Japan, have him get in touch [cjpoel(at)gmail] -- even if he can't make it down to the brewery (about 90 minutes outside Tokyo), I might be able to get up to Tokyo to have a few beers with him there. Oh, and tell him to get the Craft Beer Japan app (iPhone or Android) -- hundreds of beer pubs listed there, worth the $3 or whatever it costs. Also, he should check out https://japanbeertimes.com/ for lots of info on breweries, pubs, events, craft beer in Japan.

I've really liked the few Baird beers I've had.  The Porter and the Mikan ale seem to be the two I've seen most often on the shelves lately.

Our importer is The Shelton Brothers -- they should be able to get our beers to KC. If not, they're fired!

Hey CJ - how are you doing these days.I can vouch for the quality of Baird`s beer. As a brand, they stand up to any other brand of beer I have tried. IMO I prefer Baird`s over many well regarded brands out there. What I am saying is Baird`s brews excellent beer. I cannot imagine anybody being disappointed when ordering a Baird`s. (Assuming it is fresh and has been treated properly)I took the train down to Nimazu and sampled to Baird`s bill of faire. Worth the trip for any beer lover in Japan.Hitachino is not bad beer. Certainly a step above the major Japanese brands. Their pale ale is a SNPA clone.
