I know we have spoke about this before, but has anyone run across any new online vendors that sell decent oak barrels at a decent price?I would love to have some SMALL barrels to age beverages (like 1-3 gallon size), but I haven't found anyone that is affordable.

With a barrel that small you will need a very short contact time. Any reason you want to go with barrel over cubes in small carboys?

That would be my question as well. There's also the maintenance issue with barrels.

I've heard/read good things about using spirals in carboys. Here's a few links to what NB sells (depends which "flavor" you're looking for):American Light ToastAmerican Medium ToastAmerican Medium Plus ToastAmerican Heavy ToastFrench Light ToastFrench Medium ToastFrench Medium Plus ToastFrench Heavy ToastI'd imagine most LHBS sell them as well (I know mine does). The American oak is obviously a lot cheaper than the French stuff (French is near double in price).
