There was a mention of this in the PH a couple of weeks ago. I also happened to enjoy a Yuengling Traditional Lager at Reagan Airport in March and some family from Atlanta was in last month and they were talking about how they enjoy it but couldn't find it in Illinois (true, no Yuengling here). This is a beer that I enjoy and although it's certainly not something that most homebrewers feel the need to make, I'd like to try to make something similar. Their site says the beer is made with Cascade and Cluster hops and some amount of caramel malt. That's about it. Many have speculated that Wyeast 2035 is the right lager yeast to use. After looking at many online recipes, I came up with this but I would like anyone who has made a version to please pass it on or feel free to poke holes in my recipe or steer it in the right direction.

Yuengling Traditional Lager (the amber version... not the lighter version)

7.5 lbs Pilsner malt or standard 2-row base malt
1.5 lbs Flaked Corn
.5 oz Crystal 60 or Crystal 80L
.5 oz Cascade pellets @ 7.5% for 60 mins (3.75 AAU)
.5 oz Cluster pellets @ 7.2% for 10 mins
Wyeast 2035 American Lager yeast

OG: 1.052, FG: 1.013, IBU: 22, SRM: 8, ABV: 5.0%

I would probably dilute my water 50% with distilled, mash around 151°, add about 3g of CaCl and a smidge of gypsum to the mash, etc. The one thing I notice is that many of the homebrew recipes for this beer have the hops like this... Cascade for bittering and Cluster for finishing. I'm not sure how anyone knows that or how they concluded it should be that way. I don't really have a lot of experience with either of these hops. Would Cluster work better as the bittering addition or later addition? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Cheers.

Why? Their site says they use "roasted caramel malts" in the Traditional Lager and the beer does have a good bit of color. What am I missing?

Click HERE and it will take you to a pic of the beer I'm thinking about. You may have to enter your birthday but if you get lost, go to OUR BEER and choose the Traditional Lager and you'll see the color.

Half an ounce seems like a real small amount of crystal to me to the point of doing nothing. Half a pound, now that I could see.

His is HERE and is very similar. Many of the recipes I found online were all within a few small points. Strangebrewer's does include Carapils so I may have to go that way.

I'm planning a trip to the LHBS and will grab some CaraPils (I needed to get some anyway) and adjust my recipe to match his. I thought I tried to make something with 2035 year ago and did not care for its profile but Jeebus knows what could've been wrong at that point so I'm giving it another shot. I have everything I need except the CaraPils. Thanks gang.
