So Ken's thread got me thinking there is probably a better choice out there for my base malts. I've typically used Rahr Pale Malt for everything American. Is there really much of a difference in that and say Rahr 2-row? Would you typically just use the 2-row for lighter beers like cream ale's or blondes? What other Pale Malts and 2-rows do you guys use and recommend? Also not recommend?

Great Western is very good. Almost as good as Rahr. I don't care for Gambrinus or Briess.

The Canadian (CMC) since it's available to me. Rahr if I get stuck because the LHBS has it and I like it too - but that's been rare lately.UK malts, I just don't know yet. I haven't had one yet that disappointed but I seldom use them at 100%. Usually blended with North American stuff.

Belgians and lagers notwithstanding, it is Rahr or Simpson's Golden Promise as the base malt here.....most people can choke down the final product <G>!!!

Rahr Pale Ale malt is very nice. I have used Gambrinus Pale Ale Malt and have no complaints. I had that sack of Briess 2-row and I thought it was just fine. I will use MO or GP for English Styles, Best Malz, Durst or Weyermann Pils for lagers and soon I will be able to report back on this Canada Malting 2-row which I'm using in a Cream Ale today.

I've been using Great Western across the board since it's the cheapest available to me and I haven't noticed an appreciable difference in other brands.

I put this in the same category as trying new specialty malts, hops or yeast. You really don't know what they're like until you brew with them. Base malt seems like it would be so similar that it wouldn't matter and in some cases it may not. But I'm sure most of you would say that there really is a difference in base malts and you just don't know how much better (or worse) your beer might be until you've used something different. I forgot to mention that there was a bag of Cargill base malt (2-row) in the store yesterday too but the bag was smaller and more expensive. I like to buy what I know has worked for me in the past and the Cargill is out of my experience. The Canada malting was also out of my experience which is why it was a relief to find that you guys liked it.

$65 vs. $51 (for GW) from NCM.
