I'll be entering my first homebrew competition this year. I plan on entering a Chocolate Raspberry Porter and a Honey English Pale Ale. I just have a question on how to label my fruit beer as per BJCP rules. Here's what their site says:

THE ENTRANT MUST SPECIFY THE UNDERLYING BEER STYLE AS WELL AS THE TYPE OF FRUIT(S) USED. IF THIS BEER IS BASED ON A CLASSIC STYLE (E.G., BLONDE ALE) THEN THE SPECIFIC STYLE MUST BE SPECIFIED. CLASSIC STYLES DO NOT HAVE TO BE CITED (E.G., “PORTER” OR “WHEAT ALE” IS ACCEPTABLE). THE TYPE OF FRUIT(S) MUST ALWAYS BE SPECIFIED

Here's a picture of the bottle ID Forms I have to fill out:Posted ImageMy interruption of the BJCP labeling guideline is that for "Category Entered" I'd put "Fruit Beer - Raspberry" and for "Subcategory Entered" I'd put "Robust Porter". Am I right in thinking this way? I don't wanna screw up my entry due to mis-categorizing the beer.

The initial registration and payment is online, but then I've gotta fill out these labels and affix them with a rubberband and send em up to the poconoes.

You sure about that? What is the comp? Almost ALL of the comps are using the online reggie system now that creates the labels for you. You just print them and affix them with rubber bands.edit: It's important because your entry will be disqualified if you were supposed to print the labels instead of filling them out by hand. I'd hate to see that happen.

I know that this is probably too late, but technically that Raspberry Chocolate Porter is a 23 Specialty Beer. This is because it has special ingredients from two categories: fruit and chocolate (which is under spice/herb/veggie). If you can narrow down what type of Porter your base beer is (Brown, Robust, Baltic), it does help the judges, but just putting Porter is acceptable. The honey ale with English yeast is also a 23 Specialty Beer.

Interesting, I was just thinking since the fruit overpowered the chocolate I'd be able to just say it's fruit. I'll double check the rules and see if I can change the entry to a specialty (haven't sent it in or paid yet). Also, I was wrong about the honey ale, forgot I used american ale yeast - can i still call it an american pale ale even with the honey?UPDATE: just checked, can't do category 23 - so I'll just throw it into the fruit category and see if they disqualify it...I'm not worried about it getting a good grade since there's a nice phenol flavor in there thanks to the water company switching to chloramine since my last brew.

Ya know, I think you're right...I can't really even sneak that honey ale into the APA category...oh well, I won't submit it, I'll save it for another BJCP comp. Thanks for bringing that to my attention, I didn't even think about that. I'll try to have my warrior's pose APA finished in time to mail in - I know for a fact that'll be within style.

Was actual chocolate harmed in the making of that beer? or was it just a lot of chocolate malt?

Technically both. Threw in cocoa powder in the last 4 min and use a small percentage of chocolate malt for the burntness/color

Chocolate does not need to be called out in a beer that already has some of those flavors/aromas---like a Baltic Porter. You would list it only if it is noticeable.

Similar with the honey, if you don't notice, then don't list it. FYI, honey can dry out the finish on a beer and make the body lighter. I often use honey malt for the flavor/aroma instead of or in addition to actual honey.

Honey is the major flavor/aroma in the honey ale, otherwise I'd definitely consider listing it as an APA
