Rahr Pils vs Wyermann pils

I have used Rahr's 2 row pale many times and liked the beer I produced, but not yet used their pils. Jamil is always talking about using a continental pilsner when making a traditional recipe, so is there much difference? I am making a dubbel, and 25# of rahr cost $21.50, vs 25# of wyermann for $32.50. Is it worth paying almost 50% more for? My extraction is always good, and I do a 90 min mash and a 90 minute boil, would I taste a difference?

Don't know myself, but you might as well try both and figure out which you like better.

I've just about given up on anything but regular 2-row as a base. Even my lagers use Rahr 2-row. You can almost always add bits of specialties to "create" a finished flavor similar to the typical choices. (The only exception to this rule, IMO, is munich and vienna for which there is no substitute that starts with basic 2-row.)I do it mostly for flexibility in what I have to keep on hand. Since I buy by the bag, a single bag of 2-row will serve me for almost all the beers I make. Being vheaper is a nice benefit, too. I also think of it as a threshold situation, too. If you're Jamil and all your other processes and recipe is perfect, you're going to get a "95%" beer no matter what you do. In that situation, the final five percent to reach the perfect beer will be provided by using the perfect malt. But for those of us without perfect consistency, I think a lot of the potential benefit of using the exact malt can get lost in all the noise from other variables. Plus, to my mind, even if I have perfect efficiency I'd rather have that 95%er that was 1/3 cheaper.So, long story short, I wouldn't hesitate an instant to use the rahr pilsner (as long as it's 2-row pilsner).

You can probably get away with it in a dubbel, but any good Helles or Pilsner? Not really.

Rahr Pilsner is great, great stuff. I've used it beers from Dubbel to Pils and many others, it is without a doubt on par with the best imported Pils mals, and in my mind, superior to Weyermann Pils, the Rahr is certainly cleaner.

Rahr Pilsner is great, great stuff. I've used it beers from Dubbel to Pils and many others, it is without a doubt on par with the best imported Pils mals, and in my mind, superior to Weyermann Pils, the Rahr is certainly cleaner.

I havn't used the rahr, but I have used gambrinus Pilsner malt, another Canadian Pilsner malt, excellent pilsner malt.

FWIW, the Weyermann Bohemian Pils malt is pretty damn nice as well.

I've used Rahr pils for years now and love it. i usually make belgian ales...great in them. Very clean, I like rahr pils better than Belgian or German pils. go for it. You won't regret it!
