I doubt it. I have a thermometer sticking out of every piece of gear I own.

the decoction method dates to before the availability of thermometers

+1adding boiling temperature and body temperature (98F) about half and half will get you to a good mash temperature.

I wonder how that changes with elevation. For me, water boils at 201°F. So the "Ropes of Pearl" (which is kinda funny now that I think about it) stage would have to be about 190° instead of 200-205°.

Years ago, some guys in our club did a "Caveman Brew" and wrote it up for Zymurgy. No thermometers, no scales. I thought it was a bad idea, so I stood around with a scale and a thermometer to check on things. They weren't close on anything and the resulting beer sucked.

sure you could do it but results would be all over the place and most likely not reproducible

I have brewed good beer without thermometers or scales. It was an experiment. The beer was definitely not reproduceable but it tasted good.
