I order pretty much every single week from an online HBS, and use liquid yeast about 1/3 of the time. Well I did my checklist of ingredients, all looked well, until I unpacked its arrival today- 2 tubes of WLP530 just sittin in the open. Came from MN to MA and I think was shipped last week, so it has about 5 days in the heat. Making the starters now, (3 gallons) so I hope it takes off with no off flavors. I am expecting a little ppsssstt when I open each vial, there has got to be some activity in there. Will be pitching into my tripel on friday. We'll see!

Well, the good news is that that strain can take the heat better than some. I'm sure it's fine.

I've pretty much decided to wait for cooler months to ship fresh yeast. I managed to top crop a couple active batches so I can build them back up to pitching sizes for future use... and add them to the LBG yeast bank.

Shipping yeast in the summer months is always tricky. Even with an ice pack you can run into troubles, although I have found that they are pretty rare. This time of year I throw in ice packs very frequently for orders. I would just rather take the hit on the ice pack rather than take the hit on the yeast, or to my reputation if something goes wrong, even if it is not my fault for not ordering an ice pack.I hope your starters turn out fine. The that strain is pretty good with high temps as someone has already said.Ed

I prefer the online shops due to the pricing, but I still buy yeast locally. I don't trust having it shipped. I got a packet of wyeast yesterday with a mfg date of June 30. That's some fresh yeast!

I only wish I had this luxury with WL yeast, my "local" homebrew shop doesn't stock them :)

I was a little surprised they didnt just throw in the ice pack. W/O mentioning names, I have given them a TON of business over the last couple years. I think this has happened before once, and I got an email or a phone call before they shipped to doublecheck and see if I wanted one. Having realized I forgot I was thankful for their heads up. Hey I cant blame them if every once in awhile something slips through the cracks, their CS is always top notch. They cant always be there for my forgetfulness. Starter jug #1 is on the stirplate, so hopefully I have action in the morn.
