Laugh at me all you want, but I'm going to try the Old Style Light Lager recipe in the latest issue of BYO, including krausening for the carbonation. But here's the question. The recipe calls for 5 pounds 10 ounces of 6 Row (I'm going to use 2 Row) and 1.5 pounds of rice syrup solids. The OG for a 5 gallon batch is 1.037. In true blewbie fashion though, I'm planning on a 6 gallon batch, so everything is being increased slightly. When I run it through BeerSmith, substituting flaked rice for the syrup, I get the same projected OG. Is this right? Am I missing something or does flaked rice match up pound for pound with its syrup counterpart? For some reason I didn't think that it would. What say the experts?I'll post the krausening topic in another thread.

Use plain old rice. Cook it, let it cool to mash temp and dump it in the mash. Rice hulls as needed. It's been a while since I did this for a weird recipe. Turned out nice enough. I can't remember but I think it gelatinizes a bit higher than some of the other grains. 2-row should convert it unless you get stupid. That's all I got

The flaked stuff at the LHBS is really cheap... Like around $1.50 a pound. I thought of cooking my own rice, but I wanted to get a good feel for the recipe first.
