OK. So I have had the same co2 bottle since I started kegging which was in '07 I believe? Anyways, The last time I took my bottle to get refilled I was told,it is out of date, and that I need to get it inspected or w/e. He still refilled it, because I didn't know, and he's got a soft spot for hombrewers. Anywho I am empty again, and I need to know the best course of action. Do I just go to a place that does exchanges and hope they don't notice its out of date? Or do these places wilingly refill bottles that they know are out of date? ORRR is it just cheaper to have a new inspection done? I plan on taking care of this after work, so any advice would be great. Thanks. -HH

I'm not sure how much a hydro test costs but I don't think it's all that big of a deal. I exchange all my tanks so I don't have to worry about it. The first one I exchanged was waaaaaayyyyy out of date (like over a decade) and they took it and gave me a nice shiny new one without charging me for a hydro test. That was at Airgas....ymmv of course.

Man I would love to convert my two scuba tanks into CO2. I wonder if that can be done?

I have 2 converted CO2 fire extinguisher tanks. All they did was change the valve on top. My local CO2 place, a fire extinguisher place, did the work. I think it was $15 for the valve.

I guess that I will now have enough CO2 to last a very long time.

My local fire extinguisher place hydro'd my tank last year for $13.xx I called the welding place that fills my tank and asked them about hydrotest... they said it takes a week. I asked why and they said they take them to the fire place for test. so I called the fire place, next day turnaround and nearly half the price.

Hiller, where do you get your CO2 tanks filled/exchanged? And why aren't any of these places open on Saturday?

I did my first exchange at Airgas a couple weeks ago. Out of date and I needed it right away. I use Keller Fire & Safety for refills but they keep the tank for 3 - 7 days to recertify. I don't know if they charged extra for the out of date but it was about $30 to swap 5# tanks, which was about what I usually pay for recert and refill at Keller.

I usually refill at this beer distributor near my house. They refill my 10# tank for 15 bucks. They don't do exchanges though to my knowledge. So I did some google maps research, and realized there are like 4 "gas stores" on this one road like a half mile from my house. Its this road full of semi truck stuff, and gast stores what have you. Anyways I got it exchanged at valley national Gas for $17.87 after tax.
