So I'm really still trying to hone in on all the different hops and the flavor and aroma characteristics that they provide. To date I've basically looked up recipes or bought kits and brewed them. I either liked them or didn't and up until recently never took notes so have no idea how I liked a hop or didn't. I also really don't have a clue what most hops are good for style and/or purpose wise. So I want to start correcting that and try some new brews and hops.I also have a few recipes that I like that call for Mt. Hood hops but do not have any. I also wanted to brew Denny's RyeIPA and that calls for Mt. Hood. I would like to use some hops that I have on hand so looking for a good substitute? I have around 14 varieties, off the top of my head I cant remember them all(really need to inventory). So a little bit of rambling but there is a question in there somewhere!

Hop Union suggests German Hallertau, German Hersbrucker. Seeing it is derived from a German Hallertauer variety I think I would give that a try.

Out of everything suggested so far I have Crystal, Vanguard and Mittelfruh. Anyone have experience with using any of these as a substitute for Mt. Hood? Or what would you use?

FWIW, Vanguard but Mittelfruh would be better. I don't like Crystal much.eta - I love Mt Hood, if you can try it out.

I happen to have some Mt hood if you have something to trade 4 oz whole, just got it from Freshops a couple weeks agobut honestly 90% Mittelfruh with 10% Cascade blended in would hit the spot

That's basically Crystal. I always felt it had the floral nature of HM with a touch of citrus. I get a little citrus in Vanguard too.

Mittelfruh alone should do the trick

+1 I'd stick with 100% Mittelfrüh.

I tend to hoard my noble hops and use them almost exclusively for lagers and Belgians. So if it was me, I'd use Vanguard. However if you've got the supply, HM is surely one of the best hops there is and you can never go wrong with them.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think for this first batch I'll give the HM a go. It's good to know I could use the vanguard I may try that next time. I was trying to figure out what to do with those. Thanks for the offer mic, but I'll just stick with what I got and try some new things and wear out my supply.
