This is a good discussion. JKoravos, I think we're on the same page & I read your post as a bash towards the participants, not the sites. Having said that, I find Doobah's comments to be right on the mark... quirky beers, special occasion beers, etc. There's nothing wrong with that, but the beers I make are meant to be enjoyed without pretense or fanfare... just good solid beer that you can enjoy and it's not ultra-wimpy or whatever. I do not make beers that need to be aged for years or saved because of some special occasion... it's just beer.BrewMaster's Warehouse: Your comment about judging an APA after having an IIPA is also right on. Every time I go to a local homebrewer's gathering and everyone has already tasted the Cantankerous Sasquatch and the Surly Hop Behemoth, my beers taste like Ice Mountain Water. :chug: Cheers!

In the interest of full disclosure. I was probably one of those people at some point. I just learned my lesson. :chug:

I generally don't agree with trying to taste test one beer after another but if I must I try to start with what I'm guessing are the least flavorful and work my way up to the most flavorful and/or hoppy.

I noticed the Imperial bias on ratebeer the first time I went there. Some of the best 5% abv beers I know of get mediocre reviews while extremely unbalanced or flawed impy beers are in the 90's.

Don't forget about the high ratings for some of the most stale tasting, oxidized imported beers. Sure, I bet they're good across the pond where they are brewed, but certainly not here after traveling and sitting in warehouses for months. But yeah, reasons mentioned in this thread are precisely why I avoid, and don't give a shit about what other people online think about a particular beer. I'll taste it myself and draw my own opinions.
