It's funny how things work out. I had a series of English beers all lined up and I had the recipe for this beer all ready to go and the brewday planned. But the night before I brewed I realized that I had lifted some of the ingredients for other batches and found myself short of what I needed. I still wanted to brew so I hastily modified the recipe with what I had. Ordinarily I would use all English ingredients for a bitter, EPA, ESB, etc., but I needed to improvise here and ended up making one hell of a nice beer.
Bad Example English Pale Ale
6.75 lbs Rahr 2-row
1.25 lbs UK Pale Malt
3 oz Thomas Fawcett & Sons Dark Crystal
4 oz Belgian CaraMunich 45
8 oz Torrified Wheat
4 oz Aromatic
1 oz Mt.Hood pellets 6.1% for 60 mins
1 oz US Kent pellets 4.9% for 15 mins
1 oz US Kent pellets 4.9% for 5 mins
Wyeast 1028 London Ale yeast
OG: 1.051, FG: 1.013, IBU: 41, SRM: 8, ABV: 4.9%
I mashed at 150-151° for 90 minutes and cut my tap water 50% with RO and then used 2.5g of gyspum and 3g of CaCl. To be honest, I did not have high hopes for this beer because it was just thrown together. But it's been on tap here for a couple of weeks and just keeps getting better. That means it will blow in the next day or two. A pic:
