I would get off the bus 3 miles from home and walk. The bus took a detour to the far side of town, and it was faster to walk home than ride. I was older than 10, but I didn't mind at all. Better to walk than sit on the bus.

I think it's clear the actual walking isn't the issue - it's more the risk of abduction or something similar. not sure how I feel about that part.
