a buddy of mine will be in Oregon, Crater Lake and Mt. Hood area to be specific, so what local beers should he be drinking? I'm assuming Rogue but you can get that in NY where he is coming from so I'm specifically looking for something local that he does not have access to.

If he is driving from Crater Lake to Hood, he should stop at Deschutes in Bend. The Deschutes Pub (not the brewery, but the pub downtown) does some of the test brewing for the main brewery, so you can pick up some great beers that you can't find anywhere else. I checked their site, and they may be closed.
If the pub is closed, he can try Bend Brewing or Silver Moon. Both of these are in Bend. Just down the road from Bend, on the way towards Hood, is Cascade Lakes in Redmond. On Mt Hood there is Mt Hood Brewing. Nice place with some good beers. If he wants to go down to Hood River, there is Full Sail. They also use their pub to test out some beers you cannot find anywhere else. Walking Man is across the River in White Salmon (call ahead to make sure they are open). If he makes it into Portland, just start walking in any general direction until he finds a brewpub. Grab a beer, walk a few more blocks, and stop in at the next brewpub. There is another thread on here for Portland beers. Cascade Brewing Barrel House is good. Our Bend Pub is CLOSED beginning January 3rd until the end of January due to construction. We are expanding to a larger space with more room for our awesome fans! Come see us soon and check out our Blog for more information.

Around Mt. Hood, look for Logsdon Farmhouse Ales. A very small brewery run by Dave Logsdon, former owner of Wyeast.

There is also Double Mt. and Horsefeathers here in Hood River, both with in a couple of blocks of full sail. If he was going to be here later this summer there would be two more to choose from but they are not open yet.
