figured i'd contribute to the cause and throw this out there:Posted Imagethe bung is a regular bung that you would use with a bubbler. i take a step bit and ream out the middle portion so that any errant floculant won't clog the hole. everything is slip fit to allow easy breakdown and cleaning

Are you guys using 5 gal carboys for primaries, and that's why you need a blowoff tube? I've got a couple 6 gal ones that I use, and I've never needed a blowoff tube. Of course, I had to learn the extra headspace lesson the hard way, and I've got a stain on the ceiling to prove it.

no i'm currently using 15 gallon fermenters with blow offs:Posted Imagehowever this set up also works with 6 gallon c-boys. when i was using c-boys - even 6 gallons - and stepped up to high grav - the bubblers did me no favors and i didn't like the bulk of the traditional big bulky vinyl blow off tubes. this seemed like a more compact solution for me.

I hate blowoffs because I never feel 100% confident in it's sanitation. Once used, they are hard to get back to their original condition. After my last blowoff, I bought the Fermcap-s from NB. I will be using it now. I know Mtn used it. Others? Experiences?

I use 6.5 gallon carboys and I've had a few that needed the blow-off tubes. Two of them were Hefe's which just went freakin crazy the first couple of days. Don't remember what the other one was, but it was the first brew I made which almost ended my brewing career when SWMBO walked in before I finished cleaning it up - off the ceiling.

I too have had to clean the ceiling from a blow out on a 6.5 gallon carboy. Ever tried to clean a RIS from a textured ceiling?????Trust me, don't go there!!!I wont brew a batch now without one. I do like the idea of one that can be broken down better for cleaning.

I am categorically against foam controll agents. It is my own personal issue though.Like ScottS, I have a stain on the cealing to comemerate a cloged blow off tube.....There is nothing unsanitary about blow off tubes, if you make sure to properly sanitize and set it up before use.BrewBasser

When I toured Boulevard about 4 years ago, they had a blowoff tube submerged in a 5g bucket. It was going to town. Pretty cool. Sure you see stuff like that all the time though. If the big boys can use them then so can I. :)

Even the 'big boys' use blow off tubes. I just loved this when I saw it. Mind you it was from a HUGE fermentor at Russian River Brewing, I mean what is that tube going in to that large garbage can, like a 4 inch tube?? lolPosted Image

So you have a 1 bbl blow off on a 600 bbl fermenter. The Previous pic had a half gallon of blow off on a 15 gal vessel.Maybe I'm cheap, but I call that wasted beer.

Posted ImagePosted ImageI put a blow-off tube on the side of my bucket. This way I can put the bucket on the hump of my chest freezer and close the lid. No collar required.Next, I will investigate a right angle barb to use on the lid.zymot

I use my 5 and 3 gallon kegs for fermenting now. My plastic bucket fermenters have been relegated to other duties (milling grains, storing grains, etc.). I just run a tube from the gas QD to a jar of sanitizer. Now that I've figured out how much head space to allow for, I don't have any significant loss of beer. Since everything can be easily broken down and sanitized I've never had a problem. Also, much better control over fermentation temperatures since metal kegs conduct heat much better than plastic buckets.
