Nice malty backbone, but not over the top like some others that I've sipped on. All around, probably one of the best barleywine's I've tasted.

i'll have to give it a try, i really like their IPA, its good without being so over the top, well balanced and smooth, sounds like the gnarlywine has gotten similar care to be a good exmaple and not and over-the-top contest beer

You should really try their Imperial Stout too if you haven't already. It is delicious.

Sample: 22 oz bottlePours deep copper color with a off white/slightly tan head. Head was persistent throughout the whole glass.Aroma was strongly of American Hops and slightly grapefruit/citrus.Rich, thick mouth feel, but not chewy. Very smooth. Flavor was bitter from start to finish, but it didn't hide the malt character. Notes of caramel are noticeable, even before the beer warms. The citrus, from the aroma wasn't detectable in the flavor. This beer does not come out hot at all, especially when you consider that it weighs in at 11%. The beer is incredibly balanced.Overall this is the best barley wine I've ever imbibed. Balanced, great aroma, beautiful color, and velvety smooth throughout.
