Povidone iodine

I have a large bottle of povidone iodine from a recent surgery (label says 1% titratable iodine) and am wondering if I can use that for checking my mash. I've never done all grain nor done the iodine test, so just making sure when I attempt my first one I'm using something appropriate.Thanks! :cheers:

If your just doing a normal sac rest for 1+ hour at temps 148+ I really found that it was a waste of my time.

I'm not using any normal grain...I'm trying to malt my own teff and millet and other grains, and then roasting them to different levels of specialty grain, and then mashing or partially mashing them. So right now I'm just trying to find out if I'm actually creating any fermentables or if I'm just steeping flavor out of them (and wasting a whole lot of time and energy).

well then that is the perfect reason for iodine!

For never having done all grain before, you are certainly stepping it up by trying to malt your own grains. Now that is all grain

I think anything with iodine in it should work.I have had a couple batches where I would have sworn were converted, and they failed an iodine starch test.It is cheap, it takes about 10 seconds, it is easy to do and it is nice to know that you got nothing but sugar in there.I suggest for your first couple batches, do an iodine test that you know will fail, like the first few minutes of your mash. This way you know what a fail looks like (inky black) you will know what a pass looks like.zymot

I first read this topic as "provolone iodine" and wondered what the hell cheese iodine was.

works great for sanitizing. i would add that some varieties have some surfactant/"soap" type stuff in them, so you may want to add a rinse after you sanitize.just my 2 cents, but i used to use it very very often before i switched to star san.flatulently,
