I've heard it thrown around as a good cheap beer option. I happened to notice that it's on sale this week for something like $13 for a 30 pack of cans. Kind of tempting...

I really like it...for cheap beer. I can usually get it for about $4 for a 6er of tall boys. For a good beach beer, or lawnmower, you can't beat it!

I like it. If definitely hits the spot when the time is right. My Dad used to drink it all the time when I was younger.

It's kinda meh. As long as there was water available, I probably wouldn't drink it.

if you want something cheap, it's a decent choice.

You mention DMS here....do you they use Pilsner malt or 2-Row?Reason I ask is that I just kegged a batch of my Black Dog Cream Ale and recipe consists of 2-row, flazed maize, and a touch of honey malt. I'm picking up some light DMS but I didn't think that was possible using 2-Row malt? Am I wrong?

Pilsner malt usually is 2-row.The DMS flavor you're getting is probably from the corn, which is probably also where it comes from in Genesee.

Pale-colored malts have more of the DMS precursor SMM. The 2-row is probably pretty light. A good 90+ minute boil should get rid of enough of it.I can taste the difference between DMS (old cooked vegetable) and maize (fresh corn flavor).

Genny Cream used to be the beer every teenager in my neighborhood snuck from their dad back in the day. That beer absolutely dominated the upstate NY market until sometime around the mid to late 80's. I still live in the heart of Genny country and I hadn't had one since around the late 80's. I was pouring for a local micro at a small beer festival last month and the table next to mine was Genesee so I told the pourer I hadn't had one in probably 25 years and asked for a sample. I enjoyed it. It's light and crisp. Seems like a damned fine beer for a screaming hot afternoon in the backyard. Now that the weather is warming up and the lawn is getting cut Imma go out and pick up a case of it.

Not seen the cream ale yet, i tried the lager, the light, and the ice beer in the 24 oz cans for .99cents a can.Light and clean, nice alcohol content. Not much on flavor or body, college kids dream brews IMHO.

Wow, this thread brings back some of the best memories of growing up in Western PA :sarcasm:. I didn't think they still made Genesse Cream Ale. It was the staple of my friends and I when we were in our early teens. Cheap as hell, but we still knew it was better than Pabst, Strohs or the Beast (Old Milwaukee) and was our go-to beer when we could find someone to go buy it for us (something like $10-12 a case in those days if I remember correctly).

Hey Coastie, the price per can hasn't really changed. Local place advertises $14.99 for a 30 pack.
