I have an IPA recipe I like and have been trying to get a nice red color to it. I tried 3 batchs one with 1 oz of roasted barley added, one with darker crystal and one with 1/2 lb melanoidin. All 3 beers tasted good, but none were near the color I wanted. Anyone have a good red/amber recipe I can play with to achieve my version of a Red IPA?.I'm also tossing around an idea of a hoppy porter like beer. Albany Pump Station in Albany NY has a nice 'Kick Ass Brown' that is a hoppy brown ale. I was thinking of making a nice malty brown and then hopping it up. When I started down that path I was thinking I'd really like a hop up a Porter, but I'm not sure if the chocolate and roasted taste would just clash with the hops. Anyone have a recipe along these lines or any thoughts on the subject?

I have a suggestion on obtaining the red color of your IPA and not having to start from scratch as well. How about adding in some Carared Malt? Link I used this malt in an Imperial Amber Ale and I think I got a nice red color from it. You could go that route if you wanted. Probably sub .5lb of it in for whatever crystal malt you might already be using. Here is an Imperial Amber als as well that has Carared if you wanna give that a try. Good Luck. 10.00 lb Pilsner (2 Row) Ger (2.0 SRM) Grain 59.70 % 2.00 lb Munich 10L (Briess) (10.0 SRM) Grain 11.94 % 1.25 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L (60.0 SRM) Grain 7.46 % 0.75 lb Carared (20.0 SRM) Grain 4.48 % 0.75 lb Victory Malt (25.0 SRM) Grain 4.48 % 1.00 oz Sterling [7.50 %] (Dry Hop 7 days) Hops - 1.50 oz Cascade [8.50 %] (Dry Hop 7 days) Hops - 1.75 oz Nugget [13.00 %] (60 min) Hops 55.6 IBU 1.00 oz Nugget [13.00 %] (30 min) Hops 24.4 IBU 0.25 oz Amarillo Gold [9.00 %] (20 min) Hops 3.3 IBU 0.25 oz Simcoe [11.40 %] (20 min) Hops 4.2 IBU 0.25 oz Amarillo Gold [9.00 %] (10 min) Hops 2.0 IBU 0.25 oz Simcoe [13.00 %] (10 min) Hops 2.9 IBU 0.25 oz Simcoe [11.40 %] (5 min) Hops 1.4 IBU 0.25 oz Amarillo Gold [9.00 %] (5 min) Hops 1.1 IBU 0.25 oz Simcoe [11.40 %] (0 min) Hops - 0.25 oz Amarillo Gold [9.00 %] (0 min) Hops - 2.00 lb Sugar, Table (Sucrose) (1.0 SRM) Sugar 11.94 % 2 Pkgs American Ale (Safale #US-05) Yeast-Ale Beer Profile Est Original Gravity: 1.094 SG Measured Original Gravity: 1.084 SG Est Final Gravity: 1.026 SG Measured Final Gravity: 1.012 SG Estimated Alcohol by Vol: 8.87 % Actual Alcohol by Vol: 9.43 % Bitterness: 94.9 IBU Calories: 382 cal/pint Est Color: 14.9 SRM Color: Color

Thanks for the ideas. I have a couple brews first and then I'm going to try the Red IPA again.
