Going with the wife to Portland and Seattle this April and am planning on a stop at Rogue's and Deschutes, but can anyone recommend a good bottle shop? Want to fill up the suitcase with those West Coast beers I can't get here in Ohio.Any other breweries I should make sure to hit?

April 22 & 23 is the 17th Annual Spring Beer & Wine Fest in Portland. Not my favorite fest, but it's a good way to sample some of the different beers. If you are in Portland on Apr 30th, there is the 5th Annual Portland's Cheers to Belgian Beers. This one is one of my favorite fests. Cool concept, and a bit more low key than some of the other fests, https://oregonbeer.org/pctbbNorthwest Brewing News just had a "Best of the Northwest" issue. Not sure if it is online or not.In Portland:Bottle Shop - Belmont StationPub - Horse BrassBrew Pub - Too many! You should come up with some kind of crawl. This isn't bad, https://mylifeoncraft.com/?p=88. I've never done it, but you could try the Brew Bus tour, https://www.teamweb....ewbus/tour.html. It wouldn't be too hard to create your own tour, https://beermapping....hp?m=portlandorIn Seattle:Pub - Brouwer's CafeHale's is close Brouwer's, and they used to have a cask night

While Belmont Station is Portland's best known bottle shop, we have a few other gems that are worth checking out. The Hop & Vine on North Killingsworth St. is a great place to have a pint and buy some serious beer and wine. Not a huge selection but they only stock the good stuff. Saraveza, also on North Killingsworth, is another great beer bar & bottle shop. They do lots of tastings and meet the brewer events as well. My personal favorite however is The BeerMongers at SE 12th & Division St. Hands down the most affordable place to purchase and/or drink good beer in Portland. Only 15% markup across the board, even rare beers (Pliny for less than $4?!, $2 for a 90 minute?!) and there is never a corking fee for the bottles you want to drink on premises. In addition, the Mongers is a good place to brush elbows with brewers, distillers and other figures from the Portland booze scene. Secret homebrew tastings on Friday evenings (Shhhh...). As for breweries, my personal favorites are Upright Brewing, Cascade Brewing (Barrel House! live tappings every Tues), Hair of the Dog, Burnside Brewing (newcomers) and I'm not afraid to say Widmer. Portland has lots of Widmer haters but don't knock it till you've been to their Gasthaus Brewpub and had something 11%+ from the pilot system. Homebrewers should check out Coalition Brewing as well and ask about the Coalator Project. Oh and don't forgot Hopworks Urban Brewery. They've been voted best brewpub in Portland (brewpub capital of the world!) 2 years in a row and they were just named best draft beer on the planet by Men's Journal. We've got some killer beer bars as well. Bailey's Taproom downtown is amazing and only serve the best. Apex (across from Beermongers) has a huge tap selection. The Horse Brass is a british themed pub with some Portland grunge flair. The Grain & Gristle is an awesome spot with only a few taps but they also serve the best and do tons of custom food pairings, house cured meats and aged cheeses. I could really go on forever. I love this town!

My first thought was the Rogue and Deschutes locations, but they're not on your lists...too beer-touristy?

Rogue is out on the coast and Deschutes is in Bend. Both good locations to visit, but a bit out of the way if you're just going to see the brewery.

It's hard to keep up with all of the new places in town. I was just browsing your suggestions looking for a beer/food place to take an out of town friend. Thanks

Rogue and Deschutes both have public houses in the Pearl District. They both make good beer too...I'm personally not a big fan of Rogue however. They have a nasty habit of buying up your favorite bar and ruining it in order to turn a profit. They behave very much like 'big-brewing' and have really turned their backs on brewers, beer geeks and Portland in general. They are also notorious for having the rudest bartenders and priciest pints in town. When I moved to Portland, I held Rogue in high regards and drank my first Oregon pint at their pub. Now that I've been here for a while though, I choose to vote with my dollar and spend it at the many other more deserving breweries in town. Deschutes on the other hand, participates actively in the homebrew scene and competition circuit. They are one of the bigger breweries in town but they haven't sold their soul and are still producing some amazing beers. Their brewpub in the Pearl has nice copper kettles, rotating casks and great locally sourced food. My only critique is that the space is very wide open and it gets pretty loud from everyone try to speak over one another. We usually start at Deschutes when we are doing a downtown pub crawl. There are plenty of other places I left out as well, mostly because there are just too many to list. Can I ask, what types of beers are you into? I might be able to steer you in the right direction :frantic:

I went to Cascade Brewing last night (great suggestion, thanks), and since it's right across the street we went to The Green Dragon too. I think this is the "favorite bar" you're talking about. I'd only been there once before, when it first opened, but it didn't seem like the place has suffered under the new ownership. Great selection of local beers, and the bartender was really helpful. Also, here are the Portland and Seattle places from the Draft top 100 beer bar list, https://draftmag.com...bars-2011/#westPortlandAPEXBAILEY’S TAP ROOMBELMONT STATIONCONCORDIA ALE HOUSETHE GREEN DRAGONHORSE BRASS PUBSARAVEZASeattleBEVERIDGE PLACE PUBNAKED CITY TAPHOUSESTUMBLING MONKÜBER TAVERN

Yes, the Dragon is one of the places among others. To be fair though, I'm not as big of a Rogue hater as my post makes me sound. I've taken plenty of visitors there by request, I still frequent the Dragon and I can even be caught buying a hazelnut nectar when no one is looking. Anyone who brews good beer will earn my respect. Glad to hear you made it by the Barrel House! That place is amazing. Most of their beers will spend 2 years in a barrel before even seeing the light of day. I've had the privilege to partake in several private barrel tastings with the brewmaster and cellarmaster there. They are really pushing the boundaries of sour beers. Sang Noir is my weakness! You can find me there every Tuesday at 6pm for the live barrel tapping. :stabby:
