Probably won't have time to make it to this. My weekend is already bookedThere are a couple interesting things on the US beer list, but the British and German lists look amazing. I'll be there! (I thought attendance was required.)

Hope to see you there. You're right about Gestalt a great beer, it won gold for Altbier at GABF this year as well.I'll probably be there Saturday afternoon at some point.BTW, I had a bomber of Haverhill's GestAlt over the weekend. That beer is freaking spectacular.

Isn't it, though? There is supposed to be GestAlt on cask at the festival. We'll have to hope there's still some left on Saturday; it's a great beer on cask. It's too bad they didn't get a German Alt for comparison.22 beers on the British beer list, and I think I've only had about 3 of them before. It looks like heaven.BTW, I had a bomber of Haverhill's GestAlt over the weekend. That beer is freaking spectacular.

When I've volunteered at NERAX in Somerville, they tap each firkin when the firkin is ready (and don;t let the volunteers touch the firkins, there are only three people in the cellaring crew allowed to touch, tap, or stoop a firkin). It's not like they tap every firkin on Wednesday and people get whatever is left on Saturday. Each day, different firkins are tapped, and each night the volunteers are asked to finish off mostly emptly firkins so that the tap lines can be moved to new beers (it's painful to move the lines in the middle of the festival because it's so busy behind the bar).Anyway, it's reasonable to hope to have some a particular beer on a particular day, but don't worry about your favorite beer running out. It's just as likely to not have dropped clear yet and not be tapped. We'll have to hope there's still some left on Saturday; it's a great beer on cask.

I've learned not to go looking for a particular beer at these, because there is always a dozen fantastic beers I've never heard of before. I'm not going to count on any particular British beer, since most have already started pouring. They all look outstanding, so I've got no worries. At least two of the 4 German beers are already tapped, so they're probably gone. The two remaining look interesting: Brauerei Bayer Theinheim Ungespundetes Landbier 4.7% Brauerei Grasser Huppendorfer Vollbier 5.0%These local beers look interesting, too, and should be tapped on Saturday:Franklin's Restaurant, Brewery, and General Store (Hyattsville, MD) — Stonehenge — PouringAn English-style dark mild with a roasted malt character and subtle sweetness.ABV: 4% OG: 1.04 IBU: 15 The Prodigal Brewery at Misty Mountain Farm (Effingham, NH) — Drake’s Dunkel — On StillageOur dark amber lager uses just a dash of chocolate malt and is balanced with German hops to yield a smooth and drinkable hearty beer. A large tankard served with dinner will warm the heart even on even the coldest of New Hampshire days. Hops: Tettnang, Perle, SpaltABV: 5.2% OG: 1.054 IBU: 22Rising Tide Brewing Company (Portland, ME) — Ishmail — On the StillageIshmail is a richly flavored American Copper Ale.This interpretation of the Altbiers of Dusseldorf is brewed with a continental Munich malt, American grown hops, amd a clean-fermenting ale yeast to produce a slightly sweet and malty beer balanced by a firm bitterness.ABV: 6.50% Run of the Mill Public House & Brewery (Saco, ME) — Alewife Ale — On the StillageOur flagship ale, a bittersweet balance of malt and hops. This English-style Pale Ale is a great session beer.ABV: 4.40%Anyway, it's reasonable to hope to have some a particular beer on a particular day, but don't worry about your favorite beer running out. It's just as likely to not have dropped clear yet and not be tapped.

Basically, bottle conditioned could also be "real ale"So does "real ale" just mean cask conditioned ale? I was never clear on that.

The cask ale/real ale aspect of this festival is great, but the real draw of these festivals for me is that NERAX is very determined to deliver this beer in perfect condition. They arrange special shipping to get this beer just as it's hitting it's peak, fresh and perfect. Even if you have a common beer, like a Fullers, at one of these festivals it isn't going to taste much like the bottle you get off your store shelf. Also, non-filtered, in many cases, and non-pasteurized.NERAX can completely change your concept of what a British beer tastes like.So does "real ale" just mean cask conditioned ale? I was never clear on that.

Speaking of which, Brauerei Bayer Theinheim is apparently a nearly 300 year old brewpub in Franconia. For all who missed this, it was a great event with some great beers. My 3 faves were Spectrum Dark Fantastic, Brauerei Bayer Theinheim Ungespundetes Landbier and Allagash Ghouleschip. 3 completely different but all amazing beers.
