I've got two beers coming up with rye malt:1. denny's rye IPA (3lbs of rye, 18%)2. roggenbier 6lbs of rye (6lbs of rye, 50%)both of these have a negligible amount of wheat as well.I'm thinking I can get away with no rice in hulls in the IPA. the roggenbier I think I def need some. I have a pound and change of rice hulls. Should I be tossing it all in for the roggenbier?

A pound is a lot. I tend to measure rice hulls by the handful. A handful in this case is sticking my hand in the bag and grabbing as much as I can. I'd use about three handfuls in that beer.

Handfuls here too, maybe one for the RyePA. I don't use any up to 30%, but that's with my setup - not yours. With 50% I would be pretty liberal with it, never gone there yet.

With 50% rye, I'd use about 1 lb rice hulls for 5 gallons. Rye is very very gummy stuff. Three handfuls might be enough, but better be safe than sorry.

maybe I'll see how my first run off of the RIPA goes and if it seems super duper slow I'll throw in the rice hulls for the sparge.

I usually throw in a handful of two just to be sure. I recirculate the entire mash and would hate to have a stuck mach.

with batch sparging I'm not quite as concerned but if I was fly sparging I would def be vigilant!

I recirculate to maintain temps and step mash. When it comes to sparging, I am as lazy, er I mean pragmatic, as anyone.

Thinking about this more I should try a batch with no hulls. Seeing I mash at such a high ratio , 1.35-1.4qt/#, I bet I would not have an issue again.

This. I use 2-3 handfulls in EVERY mash. A few more if using wheat and/or rye.Rice hulls = sparge insurance

I have brewed Denny's Rye twice now without using rice hulls. I fly sparge. No issues. Have always hit OG spot on. IIRC, the 3 pounds of rye in the grain bill is not a high percentage. You should be fine.

quick question on the use of rice hulls...It makes sense that I should rinse the hulls off before using them. If I rinse them with hot tap water (that has chlorine in it) will this contribute enough chlorine to cause a problem in the finished product?
