What do you guys think would work well? I just decided I might brew on Sunday so I haven't thought about this too much.I was figuring maris otter as the base. I have some C65 for the crystal addition. Then maybe some chocolate for color. I was also considering maybe toasting some oatmeal (I have about 1/2lb I think but I guess I could just buy some at the grocery store if I wanted to add more). Then for hops I'm not sure. I've got styrian goldings, willys, cascade, cents, columbus. I do have some EKG but not a lot so I'd like to reserve that for ESB, Scottish Ales, etc (basically something more within the BJCP guidelines). For yeast it will be London Ale III.ETA: 5 gallon batch

The grain sounds fine. For hops, I'd go with the Columbus for bittering and the Cents and Cascade for flavor and aroma. I wouldn't use the other hops only because they are not as potent, though you could do a cascade/ Willamette blend...

I meant to type india not indian. :) What do you think about toasted oats in there? This isn't something I've done before so I don't have a good handle on it. I was also wondering if I should up the amount of oats to something more substantial (maybe 1 or 1.5 lbs??).

1/2# is as low as I'd go with oats before just leaving them out (unless I was just trying to get rid of them). You could easily bump it up to 1# as far as the oats are concerned, but I don't know what the lower threshold for getting a significant flavor from the toasted oats would be; I'd guess around 1/2#. Willamettes are great in a brown ale. They will give you some fruitiness without citrus, if that sounds good to you.

Is that 1 or 2 lbs?

I might do a mix of willy and cascade just b/c I have a lot of cascade from my hop harvest.

I'm curious if this is too many IBUs for the OG. What does the board say?

DFH website quotes 50 IBU and 7.2 % ABV You are over on the IBU and under on the ABV

If you want it hoppy/bitter, then full speed ahead. I think the Cent/Casc/Will throwdown at the end will serve this style very well.

I don't think I want to go that high on the ABV. I'd like to keep it around 6%.

I do! On most of my really bitter stuff I've been using magnum for the 60 min additions which is very smooth. Should I maybe back off on the columbus a little b/c it's not as smooth? I'm questioning if my bitterness perception is off.

I brewed this yesterday and I think it went pretty well. The hops absorb a lot of liquid - it makes me sad but it's just the way it goes I guess. I hit my predicted efficiency of 70% but ended up with slightly more than 5 gallons so the OG was a couple points low. No big deal though, it will still be beer

just took a hydro sample today. fermented out nicely (1.011) and tastes good although the hops are a still a little green. I'm thinking maybe I went a little overboard with the hops to be able to taste the malt but this could change with time...

hops are starting to even out now. turned out very nice although at this point it mostly just tastes like AIPA. I'm hoping at some point in it's lifetime I can taste the other cool stuff going on behind the hops. :frank:

I love the DFH Indian Brown Ale; how did your results compare? I'm definitely game to try this (or another clone recipe as it was already on my wishlist). Did the hops mellow out enough to let the supporting members of the cast have their 15 minutes of fame?

Haven't had that example. They are mellowing but it's still mostly hop that you taste. If you want the malt to show through a bit more I'd def recommend cutting back just a little bit. Maybe try changing all of my hop amounts to 1oz :D

Zymo,This looks tasty and I have been looking for a fall/winter beer. I think I will get a batch of this going in the next few weeks but I may tweak the hops down a bit. If you were to do it again would you still mash at 151? I was thinking of trying 153 to get a little more body?On the oasts, how did you toast them? Temp and time.
