I did Ken's Memory Lapse Pale ale Friday night and the recirculation on my HERMS went great. Today I brewed a Kolsch ,18 # pilsener and 2# wheat, and it was hell. I used the same crush setting as I had the night before. Does anyone adjust their crush different for pilsener than 2 - row? I do not brew with this much pilsener that often so looking to see what others do. Mike

I don't adjust my mill settings for anything. Some things just recirc less well than other. I did the Berlinner today and the sparge went really slowly even with 4 handfulls of rice hulls. It's the protein.Pilsner does have more protein on average than typical 2-row. I find that the extra protein can make sort of a "cap" on the mash during recirc that makes sparging and recirc very difficult. Unfortunately, I haven't found a way around this - even rice hulls don't seem to help much. I find this condition mostly on high-percentage wheat batches and I just don't use the HERMS for anything with a lot of wheat
