It scored a 23 (the high low and aver scores are listed). I think there is a minimum that it needs to score to advance. I have seen it 21, 25, and 27Sometime I think that the judges get overzellous and like to not give a place in small flights. In the sount cat 26 there were only 4 with the lowest score at 29.5, so the 3rd place would have been at least 29.5 or higher and they didn't give a 3rd. If I was judging that flights and gave it that score I would have given it 3rd place. Is it going to win in the 2nd rd probably not but IMO that isn't the job of the 1st round judge. A 30 deserves to be advanced if in was the 3rd place beer (or mead in this case). Now if it scored a 17 I can see not advancing it.I have also seen judges (not in NHC) give a 2nd and 3rd but not a first. That don't make sense to me.Wow... in Old West category 27 there were 3 entries. They only awarded 1st and 2nd. "No 3rd place was awarded in this category."That 3rd one mustve really sucked!

I would send it off, because if not you will never know. One thing to remember about the 1st round of NHC the mini BOS can be a crap shoot. It is a 1 bottle comp so it is not unrealistic for a beer to be sitting (opened and recapped) for an hour or so before the mini bos. If you beer was the 1st in your flight and the flight took and hour, the mini BOS panel might not of been tasting it at it peak.A lot of 2 bottle comps have this same issue, because the 2nd bottle is reserved for the BOS. Since the 1st round of NHC doesn't have a BOS it could be a 2 bottle comp, but then you run into bottle storage issues, pre-comp and during the comp. 1500 bottles take up a lot of room. But since everyone is under the same rules it is fairIt would be interesting to see out of the winners how they placed in the 1st round.Placed 3rd in the bock, my dopplebock matured nicely. I am hoping in another month and a half it will have mellowed even motr to maybe squeak out a couple more points. I dont think 3rd place in a semifinal can stand a chance in a final. Anyone else advance?

In 2006 I took 3rd in Cat. 23 in my Regional, and took 5th at the Finals, so as long as you advance, you have a shot!Placed 3rd in the bock, my dopplebock matured nicely. If I counted right, Jamil has 20 advancing entries, Gordon Strong has 17, it may be a very interesting final round. After my original post and seeing that both Jamil and Gordon have advaning bocks, I think my chances just got much slimmer. I will of course still be sending my entry, and am glad to be in their company. BTW congrats to any others here who have advanced or scored well!Go Jamil...damn...I smell another Ninkasi for him.FYI...in the Northeast, category 20 had 14 entries but no third place was rewarded!
