SO I am heading up to Anaconda, MT next week (right outside of Butte)...I turn all my trips into beercations so I will probably drag the GF to Bayern Brewing and maybe Big Sky in Missoula and probably get a few drinks at Quarry Brewing in Butte....any other beers that I have to look for to bring home with me?

Laughing Dog brewery is in Sandpoint, ID. Probably too far for a day trip but you'll probably see their beer in stores.

Hmm....I am trying to think if I have had the IPA...luckily we can get Big Sky here, Moose Drool is one of my favorite browns (English or US)If we head into Missoula I am lookin more at Bayern cause they got a German spread of Brats, Potato Salad, etc on Fridays...and last time I was up there I really enjoyed there stuff...I am trying to think if I have had laughing dog, now looking at the website I don't think I have so I am going to have to check the liquor stores for it.

Fred Colby and the folks at Laughing Dog are great. Laughing Dog was featured about two years ago on The Brewing Network's Sunday Session and are making some fantastic beers. My favorites include their Cream Ale, Alpha Dog IIPA, and Rocket Dog Rye IPA. Good beer country up there...enjoy your trip!

There used to be a brewery up in Helena (just 60 minutes away from Anaconda), but it looks like it closed down 10 years ago. Kessler Brewing... shame it had to close.

When you say "Butte is close enough", what exactly do you mean? I took it to mean Anaconda. You do know that many Montanan's refer to the area as Butte & Ananaconda. It's pretty much Montana's version of The Twin Cities, but on a much smaller scale.Going to Helena is actually worthwhile if you can swing it. See if you can get a boat ride tour of Gates of the Mountain. Lewis and Clark discovered this at the headwaters to the Missouri River. When you travel up the river, it looks like the mountains are literally opening up a gateway and then coming back if you watch, it looks like they are closing. Would reccomend finding a Staggering Oxfor a sandwhich. Guarantee you will never have a sandwich like it anywhere else. Or if you want a good "fried food" try a Pork Chop John.

Oh, don't get me wrong Butte/Anaconda IS in the top 3 or 4 population centers in Montana. But it's still small. Canyon Ferry Lake is just northeast of Helena. I've got to think that there's some good fishing in there. The river that they filmed "A River Runs Through It" is just over in the Bozeman area, which isn't too far from Butte/Anaconda. Missoula is a fun town too, but that might be close to 2 hours from B/A. If you go to Helena, I went to Carroll College, which is on the southwest side of town. Can't miss it. Looks like a ginormous castle sitting on top of a hill. No moat! About half an hour from Helena is a ghost town called Marysville. There is an awesome restaurant up there (one of the only establishments that is open in the "town")... all they serve is steak, chicken or fish. No other description. That's it. Robbie Kneiviel used to have a restaurant just north of Helena. I think he still owns it, but can't remember the name. It's a pretty good steak house.Have fun! I'm headed to Estes Park this summer for a week, so I'll be in your neck of the woods.
