I was out of Whirlfloc Sunday and decided to use this since I have a ton of it. Followed the directions exactly and it basically did nothing. I was brewing with pellets so I was relying on gravity for settling and drained from behind a diverter plate. I've done this before and it worked just OK with Whirlfloc, still lose a bunch of wort though. The grainbill was 26% malted rye so that probably didn't help. This looked like pea soup going into the fermenter. Hopefully it will finish fast so I can rack off the crud........

Yea, I use supermoss, and I think it works ok but not.....well..... super. I would quit using it too, but I also bought the 3-lifetime supply in a bulk buy from North Country.

Yeah, at least mine was a freebie from a HB comp. I was being kind in my assessment of it too..Posted Image

The LHBS had FiveStar Supermoss on close out. Based on my satisfaction of StarSan and PBW, I picked up a jar.It is more trouble to use than Irish Moss or Whirlfloc tablets. I never saw an improvement over whirlfloc, so I have gone back to Whirlfloc.zymot

Improvement? This looked worse, I mean really worse, than whenever I just forget the Whirlfloc. I'm no stranger to RyePAs either. The stuff was a bad joke. OK, rant over......

How is it more trouble to use? Don't you just throw a 1/4 tsp in at the same time as you'd throw in the others? Seems easier than cutting a whirlfloc tab in half.

The directions, as I remember, 1/4 of a teaspoon (quote: "You can use less, but do not use more") and mix it with cooled wort for 15 minutes, then add it to the last 10-15 minutes of the boil. First you collect the wort, cool the wort, add the moss, stir or shake it up, then add it to the boil.I throw the whole whirlfloc tablet into the boil. Is there a penalty associated with this procedure? No penalty other than doubling yearly my whirlfloc expenditures.zymot

This is timely because I just used my last Whirfloc tab on Monday and I have a tub of Supermoss. Some of the local brewers said they thought it was better than Whirfloc. I also read those instructions about dissolving it in wort and adding it back during the last 15 mins. DJ, did you do it that way or did you just drop in the amount? If this stuff doesn't work I will not be happy. I also just use a whole Whirfloc tab in 5 gallons and it couldn't be easier to use. If this stuff is harder to work with and it doesn't work as well, that would suck. I plan to use it next week in an amber lager... I will report back.

[quote name='KenLenard' date='14 April 2010 - 07:52 AM' ............ DJ, did you do it that way or did you just drop in the amount? ...........[/quote]I followed the instructions. Pulled some wort at the beginning of the boil, cooled it and mixed in the SM. I added it back per the instructions too.

Funny,I bought the lifetime supply 3 yrs ago. I have no issues. Works very well for me. The only time i have trouble getting clear beer and no chill haze is when i hopburst using all pellets. Eventually ( a few weeks cold conditioning) these beers will clear up just fine. But this is an issue i have when hopbursting w/pellets no matter what type of clarifier i use. One thing to consider is how you use it. Your not supposed to over dose or it will work against you. Also, i take some hot wort to mix my super moss in a pint canning jar, using the lid i give it a quick shake to make sure i get a good gell. Then toss it in there. It wont work just tossing a prescribed dose into the kettle w/o mixing the proper amounts with hot wort. Not that this has any merit.

Edit:I know the directions say cool wort, but i have not found it making much difference using cold or hot wort. There is a huge difference if you over dose tho.

I guess I didnt fully read the instructions. I just toss 1/4 tsp in when I put in my chiller 10-15 before flameout. I've never dissolved it first. The proper dosage of whirlfloc is 1 tab per 10 gal batch. At least thats what I thought it was. When I used whirlfloc I'd have to cut them in half. That was a pain in the ass so I just started using supermoss. I just assumed it was a powdered form of whirlfloc, but never verified. All my beers end up crystal clear after cold conditioning, even the dry hopped ones.

Yeah, the package shows ¼ tsp Supermoss mixed with 4 oz of cooled wort added back to the boil with 10 mins left... this is for 5 gallons. It does say you can use LESS but not MORE. Hmm. I will be brewing Monday or Tuesday next week and I will give a full report when I'm done. With whirfloc, I see the particles coming together, clumping, falling out of suspension, etc. and I end up with ultra-clear wort going from brewpot to primary. Last year sometime I planned to brew and realized that I had no Whirfloc but I did have IM. I knew it wouldn't be as good but I went ahead and brewed. The wort was extremely murky and the resulting beers were much cloudier than normal. I'm going to hope for better than that from this stuff.

The last beer I brewed I used WhirlFloc. When I was draining the boil kettle and when I was bottling, it was more clear than any homebrew I have ever made. I remember using SuperMoss and thinking to myself, "This stuff is supposed to be really good, why is this beer so cloudy?"Others may get super results with SuperMoss, for what ever reason WhirlFloc works better for me.Does anybody have any idea about overdosing with 1 whole tablet in 5 gallons and what the detrimental affects are, if any?zymot

You talking about Whirlfloc tabs? The package I got from my LHBS says to use 1 tablet for 3 gallons. I have just tossed a whole tablet in mine.

This subject was covered back on the "other" board, the manufacturer actually chimed in in a thread and verified that the tabs were meant for a 10 gallon batch.

Ha! You know, I've never asked him what they use at the brewpub or at Schlafly. Guess I will ask this weekend since we're heading out Friday. Going to this and got the parents pass to the brewer's dinner tomorrow night.Posted Image
