i put this in the beer forum also, found 60 gallon oak barrels, that i'm told last contained vanilla extract or sassafras extract for $40.00 each, any opinions on wether these could be used.

You MAY be able to use a vanilla one to make a vanilla mead. But I would be very careful of contact time. I would imagine you will get a huge vanilla flavor in a very short period of time with little oak flavor. Probably not what you are looking for. I can't really imagine using the sassafras. That flavor just doesn't mesh with wine in my head...

Honestly I am weary of any barrel going for $40 and especially a 60 gallon one. Do you know if it has any level of char on the inside? Barrels can be purchased that are coated with paraffin wax on the inside so that they make good storage vessels vs using them for imparting oak.I hate to discourage anybody from using barrels as I love mine and only plan to purchase more but make sure you are getting exactly what you want as a 60 gallon barrel can quickly turn into a logistical nightmare. Full it's going to weigh near 600lbs.

I don't know enough about them to take a chance unless SWMBO wants a couple planters then i'd buy one and check out the inside lining when i got it home, if no good then cut it in half and plant flowers.
