I see there are several threads for group buys. Have you guys ever checked into tacking your order on to a micro brewery's order? In JK's thread, looks like they are going to be paying roughly 39-45/sack. I've been getting grain at a local micro...and for their house pale malt, I pay like 30bucks a bag...and anything out of the ordinary they don't have...but can tack on to their purchse is around 40. The only reason I say this is ...well, there is not many people to do a group buy up here with..lol. Buying from the brewery can be an option.MB

I'd thought about trying that with a brewery about half an hour away from me but I'm not sure how well that would go over because they also run a HBS. ;)

I asked the owner of the local brewpub/microbrewery (barely a mile from my house) and he said it was too much trouble for him. . . ;)

I am sure if any of us were lucky enough to get hooked up by a brewery like you it would be mostly on the DL. I can just see a micro around San Diego doing this for one brewer and then having dozens lined up out their back door wanting to place "orders". Good for you for having a great relationship with your local micro and for getting a sweet deal.

I purchase from a brewpub, but I don't place special orders. I only purchase base malt so i am limited to what he uses: Best Pils malt and TF MO. I could see special orders being a pain when he is stacking the sacks, if he needs to put it somewhere else. The accounting piece could be more difficult for a brewery than a brewpub. They are probably not use to handling dirrect sales. Where I go the brewer gives the money to a bartender who rings it up in the register as some type of sale.

lol...I see your point. I've actually bought from 2 different micros here...but one went out of business. Both were really small places. The one that is still open is a 14barrel operation ...though it still may not hurt to ask next time you are at one. MB

I've looked into it around here but none of the micros use the same malt that I do.

True that - nothing ventured nothing gained. I will give it a shot and ask!

I had a tour of my local brewpub. They get their grain delivered pre-mixed in a container larger enough for their batch which I think is 25 bbls.

Don't they call that Granite City? Oh wait, that container is sent to a central brewery (the only one in the chain that has an actual mash tun) then they send out the wort to each restaurant\dispensary to finish in their pretty stainless steel tanks. I actually think in this case a Mr. Beer kit might be better. Never thought I'd say that last sentence.

I've thought about it. There's a reasonable sized micro very close to me, I may check them out sometime down the road but for now I'm going to stick with the group buy. I like the variety that NCM has for homebrewers.BTW, anyone looking to get some cheap hops, I just put up another group buy for hops. $24 or less per pound shipped to your door!
