I have been using Mt Hood in all my recipes that call for Hallertau Mittlefru, I dont love it or hate it.Im getting ready to order and Hopsdirect has Rainier as being similar. Any thoughts on Rainier?NEW!...Mt. Rainier Hop Leaf A/A - 6.8%This aroma hop, also sometimes called Rainier, is a cross of Magnum and a numbered male variety from Henning's breeding program at OSU. The aroma is described as floral/spicy and flavor similar to a Hallertau. Aroma is reminiscent of licorice with a hint of citrus. Domestic VarietyIts only $10 a pound.

Did you ever try Goose Island's Harvest Ale? I don't know if it's a year-round beer now or if it was a seasonal or what. But it had Rainier added late in the boil to produce a really nice combination of flavor and aroma. We were talking about it on the local board, I think. The conversation is here. I'm not sure why they would be so inexpensive, but maybe nobody is buying them because they don't know what to do with them. They sound lovely to me.

I have used Rainier's and still have about 4 oz in the freezer...my perception is that i don't really think "Aroma is reminiscent of licorice with a hint of citrus."My first batch with them was basically MLPA with them used instead of Mt. Hood....can't say that I was truly in love with that beer. My 2nd was an American Wheat that I was also not really in love with...In my brewing experience I tend to put down hops before anything else when I make a beer that wasn't my total plan and i was using these hops for the first time...which is why I still have 4 oz from a year ago in the freezer...The american wheat was very apple like so it was probably my yeast or my ferm temp that caused that...but I still blame the hops (poor hops)I think these are better suited to be mixed with other hop varieties...sometime down the road I will make an IPA and incorporate these.

Yes. I'm trying to remember.

I was actually thinking of getting both Mt Hood and Rainier to play around with.

Hmm. I had a spreadsheet that was emailed to me by one of the employees at Goose Island. It was a nice little bit of info as it had the grains, hops, ABVs, IBUs, etc. of all of their beers. But I may have lost it because it was on an old computer that had to have the HD reformatted and the OS reinstalled. I'm sure someone else has it because I emailed it around. Anyway, in that spreadsheet, the Harvest Ale has Rainier hops in it. I think these guys change their recipes occasionally.

Ken, You're right! I just checked out the sheet and it does say Mt. Rainier. Although, the sheet is from 07. I could e-mail it back to you too if you want.

Thanks JayB. I posted a thread on our local board and someone emailed it back to me already, I appreciate the thought though. Yeah, I knew they used Rainier in that beer but they either changed their minds or maybe couldn't get their hands on them. DBS: If you want a copy of the spreadsheet, PM me your email address. This is a spreadsheet I got from someone inside of Goose Island and many of their beers are listed here along with a lot of info (excluding yeast strains) and it's pretty amazing how much info they don't mind sharing with homebrewers. The beers included in the document are: 312 Urban Wheat Ale, Honker's Ale, India Pale Ale, Nut Brown Ale, Oatmeal Stout, Summertime Kölsch, Christmas Ale, Harvest Ale, Kilgubbin Irish Red, Imperial IPA, Demolition, Imperial Brown Goose, Lamar Street Pale Ale, Matilda, Bourbon County Stout and Pere Jacques.

Rainier to Cascade? By the description that seems like a big change.

It used to be Rainier (which they refer to as Mt. Rainier) and Cascade. Now their website only shows Cascade, no Rainier. Cheers.
