I just got a barley crusher this week and used it for the first time today. Agaist, what I thought was better judgement, I used it without adjusting it. I came in at 81% efficency! I am definately happier grinding my own grain than having it ground at my LHBS. I did however have a couple grains go through with out being crushed. Any thoughts?

Right on John! I love my barley crusher, I'm working on hooking up a motor so I don't have to use a drill anymore. Good on you for getting one, I am actually thinking I may have to dial back my crush since I've been getting almost too much efficiency with the default setting. I''d like to come in between 75-80%, currently I'm over 85.

I love mine and have never adjusted the factory setting. There is the occasional husk/grain that doesn't get crushed, but no problems keeping my efficiency up. Cheers.

I have not adjusted mine from the factory setting either. Most of the time i hit around 75% or more.Don't forget to taste each type of grain ,that is what i do if i have the time. :P

I'm sure the more expensive mills are awesome, but I love my barley crusher.

Great choice of mills John. I love the BC and it does a fine job. If you are really concerned about the grains I double crush mine and get great efficiency each time as well. If its just a few grains I would not worry much. Enjoy the mill!!

I normally get around 80% efficiency using the factory setting on my Barley Crusher, more or less depending on how big the grain bill. I can't imagine needing a more expensive mill. I think an advantage of the three-roller mills is that you can mill much faster without shredding and dusting. As long as I keep my Milwaukee cordless about half throttle on low gear, I couldn't ask for a better crush.

I have a brand new Barley Crusher that I bought back in July that I have not used yet. This thread is encouraging for when I do get the time to break her in.

What? Posted Image Are you kidding me? I crush with a converted pasta mill and while I get 80-85% efficiency it take a long time to crack the grist. I'd kill for that thing! A good mill is my next major purchase.Beach

I know man, lots of stuff happened to me after the purchase. Brewing accident in the Kitchen - remodeled kitchen, then just needed a break, baby in the house, swine flue, other sicknesses, weather, blah blah blah.I'm about ready though, and need to get a brew together for my local brew club competition - check out the quiet storm thread in the recipe section if you care to assist..

I finally got to use my Barley Crusher for the first time. Granted it was only 1 3/4 lbs of grain, but dang it definitely was visibly a better crush than the mill at the LHBS. It was also the last time I am going to use the hand crank. Going to use the drill next time. :stabby:

I started out using the drill and switched to the hand crank. I think the crush looks a little better when I do it by hand but I could be loco.

yeah when I got mine last year I started out cranking by hand. Then I discovered the vast glory of power drills. I can grind 14 pounds in less than 3 mins with a great crush. The whole hand crank thing makes me feel like I'm making beer in 1860!
