So I sent off two bottles of dry stout to a comp. It was probably the worst batch (by no means bad) of dry stout I have made - way overcarbed for style and the sugar wasn't mixed very well so some of the bottles gushed a little, not lots. The two I sent to comp I realised after sending may have been gushers - and according to the score sheets they did!! Anyways, so I've been brewing for about 11 months now, and this was my first comp. I got some great comments and advice for next year's dry stout in this comp, so all in all I fell pretty good about my scores and comments. I had a low of 25 and a high of 28 and one right in between. So for a couple of gushers sent into comp hahaha I feel that's ok. Anyone care to let me know if this is an ok score or what??I was heartened by the comments of all three that say I'm heading in the right direction...1 - "Good beer - well brewed"2 - "Gushed when opened :rolf:, but evaluated much better than initially expected."3 - "Gusher. The beer however, was quite pleasant and surprising."Seeing as I got such comments from each of the three judges that tasted my brew I am counting this as a success and I am working on a re-draft of my dry stout recipe with a few of their other comments in mind and lesssssss carbonation next time hahaha. I will post my results and a little tweaking!

Awesome to see earthtone, I have only entered our local County Fair Comp, but I have done well. It always feels good to get some outside feedback, sepecially when they affirm your own thought on the beer.

Nothing wrong with beers in the high 20's low 30's. You don't get up there with any serious flaws.

haha no this was the MIM comp (March in Montreal). Next year I will be prepared, I just sent what I had this year. Next year I will brew specifically for this comp and it will be badass :rolf:cool thanks for the input george!

First congrats on entering than fine competetion. On of the best in Canada. The A.L.E.S. club in Sask.is presently holding their quallifier ( Canadian entry ) for the NHC first round. Entry is now closed. That is a fine comp also.I entered a few brews also to MiM and the same brews to the Cowtown Yeast Wranglers comp.I got lower marks in the MiM, but I attributed that to the fact that the high marks (37ish) were given by pro brewers from Calgary and they didn't leave much feedback like the other judges. The other two judges from Calgary were spot on with the judges from Montreal in the Mim comp.Entering competetions is a great way to get honest feedback, give or take, that will only makeyou a better brewer should you act on the advise given. One of these days I'll brew a brew specifically for a comp to be more true to style than an off theshelf brew I have around to send in.Again congrats.

I think you were getting those comments phrased like that because once they judges saw gushers they probably braced themselves for a crappy beer and were likely pleasantly surprised they didn't get to sample a POS. <_<

I think you're right. I'm feel like I took a big hit on the carbonation and obviously the gushing and that makes a lot of sense. I'm glad they were pleasantly surprised though!!!Those probs are easy to fix, the other suggestions were also very helpful and my next batch I'm going to see what I can do to really nail this thing down.

Ditto, it probably prejudiced the judges a bit too with scoring other aspects of the beer unless they were really good. I would consider it a successful first entry. Nice job!
