Just wondering how everyone sanitizes these. I've been putting it in the kettle around 20 - 25 minutes before flameout (or power off around here)Posted Image But, I've been loading up on late whole hop additions lately. A lot are getting caught between the coils and the kettle sides. I would prefer to have them circulating better since the additions are so late. Guess I could rebend it (again) to fit a bit closer to the kettle walls. I've rebent this thing about 5 times and it shows.... The QDs still look cool though.......

I add my immersion in with around 10-15 mins left in the boil here. I use pellets and my immersion is not really near the sides of my boil kettle. I can easily swirl and whirlpool as I chill the wort to pitch temp. I have noticed some hop residue but nothing that has concerned me with any losses in the hopping. I too like to use plenty of late hops in most of my beers as well. I would think that if the leaf hops you are using are sinking in your wort even if they are stuck to your immersion they are still diplacing and releasing their hop oils into the beer. I can't think of any suggestions off hand for you at this point.

I put mine in around 10 minutes left in the boil. I used to just submerge it in sanitizer, but i like this method better.

I add with 5 min left, I think that's plenty of time to kill anything and everything on it. No contamination problems so far.

Do you let your wort settle after flame-out? You could probably put the chiller in at flame-out as long as you let it sit for 15 minutes before chilling.

I keep a bucket of "old" sanitizer (probably good but I don't really want to risk using for stuff that's important) to sanitize the chiller. I then add it into the boil for 20 minutes to be extra safe.

I put it in with 15-20 minutes left in the boil. I've been using pellet hops with nylon reusable hop bags. I just have to make sure I don't trap the 60 minute hop bag under the chiller when I put it in. I use a sanitized stainless spoon to pull out the bags and then use the spoon to stir the wort while it is cooling so keep it moving over the coils. Usually 15-20 minutes and it's down to temp.

I should have posted - why are you guys worried about hops getting on the coils? If anything gets pushed up I just push it back into the wort. No biggie.

Thats along the lines of what I was saying. If the hops (leaf or pellets) are in contact with the wort what would sticking not allow the hops to add the flavors and aromas to the wort. It would be one thing to not make it into the wort but if its in contact with the wort I would think the heat and all would extract as needed.

They are piling up like crazy between the coils and the kettle. Barely in contact but no where near what contact would be without the chiller in there.
