Suppose I was considering growing some hops for sale. What varieties should I grow?

I bought Cascade and Columbus rhizomes this year. Last year I killed a cascade and a nugget with too much fertilizer, and the dog from hell (not our dog) dug up and killed 1 of 2 donated Willamette vines. If you can find a Columbus rhizome, go for it. It's my favorite hop and the rhizomes are harder to find than others. Cascades are supposed to grow well in most areas. If you're gonna sell them, call them organic so you can charge the suckers more money.

It's tough legally to call them organic. I've been doing the organic-like farm thing for about 5 years now. 3 years of govmt regulations to have the privilege of calling it organic. I'll see what I can get. Thanks for the info. A friend of mine grows hops to stuff in herbal sachets.

Anything named after a location in Oregon: Cascade, Columbia, Willamette, Mt Hood.Second would be other things NorthWest related: Chinook, Olympic.

I got what I could. Things are pretty sold out. I've picked the spot. Today I'm building a fence to keep the chickens out and probably start digging the post holes for the trellising. I got Cascade, Fuggle, Mt. Hood, Pearle, and Willamette. We'll see how this goes.

I planted a Zeus Rhiozome from freshops last year. It seems to not be growing nearly as well as the Cascade I already had. Even if you take into account the couple of years difference in the plantings, it still seems weaker. The conditions in the yard seem to be the same, but if it ever gets big enough I will try to plant a cutting somewhere else to see if it does better.My brother in law planted a couple of Liberty rhizomes I got for him to much the same results. To answer the original question, I am far happier with the cascades I am growing than anything else, and would recommend them as a starter hop based on my experiences.

Grow what does well in your climate I'd say. However I use a lot of cascade, centennial, amarillo, simcoe, etc.
