We've stopped using telephones at work and everybody talks to each other with Teams or Zoom even if they don't want video. During the recent remodel most people decided to give up their desk phones for extra real estate, including me.

But using Teams with headphones or ear buds for unplanned calls is awkward.  You have to keep them nearby even if they're not plugged in all the time, then fumble with them when a call comes in.  I didn't like it so I bought one of these

Now it sits next to my docking station, plugged in and waiting for a call.  I just pick it up and answer on the screen.  It's great!  From a lifetime of experience I'm good for a long time holding it without much tsuris, and if I get tired I can just switch to buds.  As it's still new, it's made for some fun conversations as people see it for the first time on a video call.

There are cheaper versions of this idea on Amazon, but I went with this one based on reviews and features.  This one doesn't have any buttons to break or not work, and the sound is really very good - especially for those listening to me from a microphone right in front of my mouth.  The handset is nice and heavy in the hands - maybe 8 ounces. You could definitely use it as a club to good effect. Full disclosure, however: the first one I was sent was a little bit shorty around the plug.  It worked, but I was not sure it would last long-term, so I sent it back for a replacement.  The new one was delivered the next day and has been perfect.

I'm honestly thinking about getting one for my mother to make it easier to use her iPhone.  It comes with a USB-C adapter, but I'd need to pay extra for Lightning.

I'd be concerned that I might turn my video on accidently and never live it down.

I'm totally getting one of those.

We are looking to go to Teams VOIP and ditch RingCentral.

The other nice thing is that all your telephone instincts still work. Wanna mute a second? Cover the mouth piece.

So much this. I can do maybe 1 bud in the ear if i really need both hands (10" tho) but I need situational awareness.

do you guys try to do calls in a room with a door (conference room, office)?  in cube land this would be a giant no-no.  people are trying to concentrate.

If i had to operate in a cube farm, i'd put both buds in and be the thing that people need situational awareness for.

It would actually be really easy to make a bluetooth version of an old school receiver phone, buttons and all, that connects to your cell phone. I’d be surprised if that doesn’t exist already.

Eta: looks like Sparkfun had one at some point but it’s not in the website anymore. (Story is from 2009)
