This is stupid, I don’t get it or reciprocate when someone else sneezes. Why do people do this? As someone who is Atheist/Satanist how should I even react to this when people say this? Now, I always give a polite “thank you” but then roll my eyes.
I know I’m not alone here..
You are not alone. I think it's absurd and I don't do it. If someone says it to me I am polite and say "thank you". But I generally avoid participating in that ritual.

To add... occasionally I'll say something absurd when someone sneezes especially if it's like a fit or something and they keep coming.
Like "ferschtunkanen!" or "farfagnugen!" or something like that

I started saying Godzilla a year or so ago and when someone looks at me funny for it I tell them it's non denominational.

the heart stopping thing.
you highlighted the part where I said I had no idea if it was true or not, that's why I asked. because I had no idea and didn't care enough to check it out? I was like 10-12 when it was told to me, felt like BS, but it didn't even register on my GAF meter and still doesn't to be honest. I seriously care more about things like 'why are the CVS receipts so long?' or 'at what point on the spectrum does red become pink?'

I get where you might wonder when you were 12 but when you're an adult... come on!!!! just typing that out should have been enough thought to realize it's BS.

maybe, but I never cared to see if there was any truth to it. you know as well as I do the human body does some strange shit, no-one has it all figured, but yeah, I always suspected it was BS but never cared to check. like i said, doesn't even register as something I cared to find out about, even as an adult, even if I ~suspected~ it was bs, I dont care about it.

Claiming to not know something simple while using a device that could provide an immediate answer for said question is a cornerstone of boomer culture, don't tread on them

ORIGIN 1. People used to believe a sneeze caused someone to expel their soul out of their body, and so “God bless you” or “Bless you” was used as a protection against the devil snatching your soul.
OR
ORIGIN 2. During the Middle Ages in 14th century Europe, the bubonic plague (also known as the Black Death) was widespread. Because it was usually a fatal disease, and people were often very religious, the phrase “God Bless You” offered a benediction to someone who might no longer be living soon.

Might be wrong but I don't think sneezing is a symptom of bubonic plague.

Which sends you to https://www.snopes.c...heck/bless-you/
Which then ends up quoting Pliny and Apuleius, so it appears that saying "Bless you" (or some variant) is actually of pre-Christian origin.

Why only sneezes? Don't other bodily functions rate blessings? Farts? Seems like another good opportunity for your spirit to exit your body... What about belches?

I used to ask the person "are you the pope?"
Around the house I just tell everyone that I sneezed. And will tell them they sneezed too.

Next time someone farts near me I'll say "gesundheit" or something similar
