What kind of water heater should I get - gas or electric?

I must have done some math wrong earlier.  last month I used about 174 kwh so at the current rate only about $8 per month.  in the summer there would be more savings but yeah, not that big of a deal.

So the lesson here is don't just assume heat pumps will save you money over gas. Probably better for the environment but yeah, not much, if any, savings if your electricity is expensive like it tends to be in the north east, CA, etc.

There's also the crucial point that gas price is SUBSTANTIALLY more volatile than electricity. Right now it's been a warm winter, Europe's gas storage is full and China has been locked down. All the signs point to much increased demand for LNG in the Fall and winter. Add to that the new reluctance for frackers to run at a loss forever, and locking into a gas water heater seems to me to be...ahem...a courageous move.

yeup.  I can see the steam or whatever is released from the gas powered plant right out my back window :P

My water heater is in the garage, so one extra benefit of a heat pump would have been cooling and drying it in the summer.
