I want short run of ethernet cable between my wifi mesh node and my lap top.  I can put the node on the same table, so I need like a 2 or 3 foot length of cable.

 

What specs for the cable am I looking for or what shouldn't I get?

Anything labeled CAT6 is fine. If all you find is CAT 5, that would work too.

Do not worry about length.

Yup. It doesn't matter. Cat 6 is more bandwidth, but you're not going to use that going from a mesh wireless node to an endpoint. It might be worth it to connect nodes as a backbone, but not to an endpoint on a slower node.

Find the cheapest thing you can. It would be hard for this not to work.

Thanks, guys.  I assume I would get a slight increase in speed/bandwith with the cable vs. just close proximity with the node?

Depends on bandwidth available to the node. Wireless conditions could exceed the maximum available bandwidth, depending wireless flavor, environment, and network capacity. But, generally, wired will reliably give you the best possible performance.

You are better off making a wired/copper connection when you can.

As long as you are under 100 meters in cable length, you should be just peachy.

I like the Monoprice.com SlimLine series. Less bulky and more flexible than most ethernet cables.

Be sure to check all the lengths and colors... you can sometimes find bargains. For example, right now:

 

For 5-foot cables, Black, Blue, or Yellow is $4.99, White is $4.49. Red is only $1.99.

 

For 7-foot cables, Blue is $5.49, White is $3.39, Purple is $3.19, and Green is $2.99.
