kind of an offshoot from another discussion.  I know a lot of people have their preferred brands of stuff.

curious if anyone has compared CMC vs GW US 2-row.  the last few years I've been buying CMC all the time.  on my last order I had to substitute GW in its place.  anyone used both of these enough to have a feel for differences?  I've used some other US 2-rows in the past but I'm not sure if GW was one of them or if I remember what it was like.

I’m not going to say there’s no difference but I’m not sure that most people would find base malts of the same color to be different enough to notice a difference.

I'm sure there are people who can tell. I doubt I'm one of them, unless, possibly I were able to do side by side tastings of identically brewed beers designed to emphasize the base malt, something that I don't routinely have an opportunity to do.

But if someone has actually done this systematically and has found clearly superior or inferior base malts, I'd certainly take that into consideration when choosing base malts. Obviously there are personal preferences at play, but descriptors can help with that.

Yes, I can.

So it doesn't look like Simpsons is carried by country malt (where I get most of my base malts from).  They have TF and Bairds so I could try Bairds next time.

an area where I can def tell the difference is specialty malts which I think makes sense as they have a much more intense flavor contribution so any differences are going to be amplified.  The castle chocolate malt you suggested is for sure quite different than the Breiss I was using.  I recently bought Bairds chocolate malt and that seems a lot closer to castle but maybe not quite the same (hard to say for sure).

Simpsons GP is what I have always used only because it is what I can get at cost.

Yes, I can.

Like I said, most people.

I’d still feel comfortable swapping base malts in any of my beers and would also feel confident that you wouldn’t notice. Even if you did, tip of the hat ol chum  the beer is still delicious

I have no doubt it's delicious.  And to some degree it depends on which malts.  Something like Briess and Rahr might be harder to tell apart. Crisp Plumage Archer vs. Great Western would be obvious.

yeah in general I would not expect British and US/North American to be the same.  similarly I wouldn't expect CMC Pilsner malt to taste quite the same as Weyermann.

They won’t taste *quite* the same, but as long as the color of the malt is close, you’re still set up to make great beer. Don’t screw it up!
