The Dark Souls series is now in a Zelda-like open world. Goes live at 9pm PST

Early reviews are extremely positive

Alright, this game is legit. If you've liked Dark Souls you'll be right at home here.

The kid is extremely frustrated. Says it's the hardest game she's ever played.

You beat it yet, or did the game beat you?

Friend of mine says "it doesn't really feel like you're fighting bosses, it feels like you're fighting a set of moves". There is one "right way" (depending on your class) to beat the bosses and you pretty much have to stick to the "pattern" for each boss.

I guess that's kinda how these "Souls" games are, I haven't played any of the previous ones though.

That's a pretty reductive argument from your friend and I couldn't disagree more. Yes, like any boss fight you have to learn the attacks. This has always been true in gaming. But saying they're nothing but a set of moves is completely ignoring their great designs. They are all so different.

And he's also wrong that there is a "right' way to play. You can build whatever you want. Sure, some bosses will be harder if you build a character that only deals fire damage and fight a boss that's heavily resistant to fire damage. That's more of a character choice flaw than a game one.

Basically your friend is so wrong that I'm now judging you. How dare you.

Just bought this last night. This will be my 2023 playthrough. I do about one a year. Since 2018 i’ve done BOTW, AC Valhalla and Witcher 3. I tend to play over the winter when going outside isn’t pleasant. I’ll be on this for the next 6 months or so.

Holy crap. This game is tedious. I just played for an hour and i literally made no progress. Just fighting the same group of foot soldiers over and over again. Hopefully the whole game isn’t like this.

You can run away from any enemy and come back to them once you’ve leveled up

Yeah, that’s what i’ve been doing. It’s not clear whether you actually *have* to fight any of these enemies.

Well, sure, but going to the walkthroughs this early in the game feels like a bit much.

I'm not sure I'm going to keep going with this game. The progress-to-time played ratio is pretty low.  I'll give it some more time but my interest is quickly waning at this point.

What if you took the drugs that make the walls seem super interesting. Then could you play longer?

I heard it described as a modern version of Dragon's Lair because you have to learn the specific move sequence for each obstacle and boss. Less natural play and more memorizing of steps.

Is that fair?

I heard you could beat the game in 9 minutes without fighting anyone. Is THAT fair?

I meant is that assessment fair, not whether the game was fair or not.
