(December) Biden: We will not send troops to Ukraine!

Romania & Poland.  That's equivalent to sticking your finger 1" from you little brother's face and saying "I'M NOT TOUCHING YOU".

Best spin on this is I guess this is to dissuade Russia from rolling into NATO countries after taking out Ukraine.

On the flip side, all our posturing and rhetoric is destabilizing and weakening Ukraine, which would seem to only ensure their demise at the hands of Russia.

Basically, I think the hawks can't stand to let Russia win, or at least give the appearance of being unchallenged, but everyone else isn't willing to go to war.

It's actually looking more and more like Putin has decided not to invade (probably because the oligarchs told him to stop f*cking around) and is now looking for a way to climb down without losing face.

The calculation was that nobody would care much and Europe and NATO were too divided to do much of anything. Instead......

Russia seems to be backpedaling indeed.

I think the fact that the US and others have dumped literally tons of defensive weapons into Ukraine in the last month helps a bunch too.

Russia can certainly roll right on over the Ukrainian defenses if they want to.  But the presence of thousands of anti tank weapons, MANPADS from us and Poland, and who knows what else, are a big deterrent. The occupying forces won't be able to go an hour without taking a hit from a force that just melts back into the population.

I just saw a story about the woman who won the presidential election in Belarus.  The incumbent basically pulled a Trump (probably with Putin's hand in his back) and said, "No, sorry... I won" and the woman and her kids are in exile in Lithuania and the husband is serving 18 years in prison in Belarus.  So there is a puppet government there and they have a border with Ukraine and Russia's troops are amassed along that border as well.  This may be obvious info but I have only been getting snippets of news lately so it was new information to me.  Not surprising in any way though.

I haven't seen this mentioned in here... but there's a timeline for the Russian troops to cross the border - apparently, the Russian equipment will only be good when the ground freezes - and apparently, it all thaws in about 6 weeks (per the groundhog).  After that, tanks and whatnot won't be able to make it through the mud.

It's less extreme in northern NY obviously, but mid-spring is known as "mud season" up there.  It doesn't cause travel issues, but basically nobody wants to do anything outdoors because everything is mud

Are we just going to Amazon Prime them there or are we going to be there operating or even just training? And what happens if Russia rolls in and takes possession of them?
