Wow. No electric pickups yet except for Rivian and I don't think I've seen an SUV that is the size of the R1S. Tesla made a very small SUV thing that looks nothing like the R1S so that would be TWO vehicles that Rivian released first... if the R1S is coming out soon. B72, any idea when the R1S will be in production?

They've been advertising the crap out of that thing. I know I asked B72 this before but I wonder if Rivian had the forethought to build a battery production plant on their campus so that they don't have to wait in line for batteries along with all of the other EV manufacturers. If so, they could really get a head start on everyone else. This will be fun to watch.

We do have our own battery line.

I feel like that is a game-changer.  I might not completely understand but I seem to remember seeing a few things about how there is a backlog of batteries because having your own battery manufacturing plant is dangerous and hard to insure.  So some manufacturers just buy them but eventually that's going to be tricky because the demand will be so high.  I'm sure that JKor and the other carheads here know more about that but I could see Rivian really jumping out in front.

We don’t make the actual cells but we do build the battery packs for the vehicles. I won’t say who but I bet if you google possible battery manufacturers in Normal, IL it might say…

Did Ford release that Lightning F150 thing or is that still waiting?  I feel like I have seen those commercials for awhile now.

The Lightning is getting a lot of good press because it way cheaper than the Rivian, but its really not. Ford is advertising a EV work truck. By the time you add extended batteries and options you just bought the better made Rivian.

That seems like a premature ranking. With no track record we have no idea.

The base Lightning will be in the low 30s or even high 20s if the EV tax credit in increased. It’s not equivalent to the Rivian but it is definitely way cheaper. The equivalent Lightning will be as much or more than the R1T but that’s what brand cache gets you.

Of course you don’t know exactly what final pricing will be but all the comparisons the major auto reports say the Lightning will top out at $90k. Early on its obvious Ford is baiting the consumer.

Also the Rivian isn’t a work truck. It’s a serious luxury truck with work capabilities.

That’s the very top end. Most people will get the XLT or Lariat which will be under $50k and under $60k, respectively, after the tax rebate.

Did you mean could have bought the rivian, or are you saying a loaded lightning is a better made rivian?
